Blacksburg, Va. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team fell 7-0 to the 38th ranked Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday afternoon as the Chanticleers opened the 2015 season at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Chants started the day with a win on the third doubles court, as Rick Timmerman and Vuk Velickovic defeated Joao Monteiro and Edoardo Tessaro 6-3. It was the Hokies, however, who controlled the rest of the match.
Amerigo Contini and Jai Corbett evened the doubles point with a 6-3 win on the second court over Renan Samed and Garik Yedigarian. Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz then sealed the point for Tech, defeating Kaue Pereira and Philippe Tsangarides 6-4 at No. 1.
The Hokies swept all six singles points, beginning with a 6-2, 6-0 win on the first court by #35 Contini over Tsangarides. Pereira fell to #61 Bjerrehus at No. 2, before Tessaro clinched the match for Virginia Tech by defeating Jabor Al-Mutawa at No. 5.
Velickovic fell in straight sets to Hunter Koontz on the fourth court, as did #119 Samed to #94 Nicoud at No. 6. Monteiro closed out the singles matches with a three-set win over Yedigarian on the third court.
The 0-1 Chants will now look to pick up their first win of the season on Monday when they take on #73 East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
