Greensboro, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer teams' season came to a disappointing end Friday night as the No. 2 seed Chanticleers fell to No. 3 Campbell 2-0 in the Big South Conference tournament semifinals.
Campbell's, Ashley Clark and Big South Attacking Player of the Year tallied both goals coming in the 45th and 62nd minutes of the game to give the Camels the victory. Coastal concluded its campaign in which they placed second in the regular season and advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row with a 12-7-1 record.
After play remain mostly in the midfield for the first 20 minutes, Coastal started to gain more of the possession earning back to back attack attempts. After earning a corner kick, senior Mikayla Williams controlled a ball at the top of the box blasting one just over the top of the cross bar.
The remainder of the play was even with back and forth attacking chances from each team. Just seven seconds before the half ended, Clark finds the back of the net giving Campbell the 1-0 lead to end the first half. A cross was sent in from the right flank to the back post finding Clark, who volley's it one-touch to the opposite post to score.
Going into the second half, both teams came out with more determination than before. Each team had multiple dangerous chances throughout the half but Coastal seemed to control most of the attack.
Amber Adams had an opportunity as she took on two Campbell defenders looking for goal but her shot just goes wide of the goal post. Following that attack, Coastal answered with two more both which earned corners.
Mid-way through the half, the tides began to turn a little with Campbell taking over the attack. Becca Austin was put to the test on two potential dangerous opportunities but came up big for the Chanticleers.
Minutes later, Campbell found the back of the net in the 62nd minute for their second goal of the night. A long ball was sent over the top of the defense finding Clark running onto the ball. Taking two touches, Clark shoots a hard-low ball to the opposite right corner for her second goal of the night.
Trying to gain back to momentum, Coastal puts together three back to back attack attempts. The Chants earned a free kick two-yards outside the box and was able to put a shot on goal but the Campbell keeper knocked it away. With the clock running down, Coastal had one last chance to go for goal but the shot goes wide.
Coastal finished with a 16-10 edge in shots for the game, while Austin recorded five saves. Adams led the team in shots tonight recording six and having three on goal.
The Chanticleers five seniors -- Williams, Miki Antzoulatos, Camille Christie and Darbie Kelley finished their careers helping lead the team to back-to-back seasons of a program best since 2008.
