Final Stats

CONWAY - Winthrop sophomore Matt Crohan, who pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 in eight innings, took a no-hitter two outs into the sixth inning to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 win versus Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.

While the Chanticleers won the weekend series, Coastal had its 11-game win streak snap and is 20-7 overall, 5-1 in the Big South. Winthrop improves to 18-10, 2-4.

Crohan struck out at least one batter in seven of his eight innings pitched and retired 12 straight batters from the second to fifth innings. His no-hit bid was spoiled when Anthony Marks, who had CCU's only two hits Sunday, looped a ball into center field with Anthony Paulsen nearly coming up with a sliding catch. Travis Shelley earned his first save of the season working a scoreless ninth frame.

Winthrop got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the third. Tyler Ashbill reached on an error, Mitch Spires singled to center field and Paulsen loaded the bases with a bunt single. Roger Gonzalez brought home Ashbill with a single to left field and kept the bases loaded. Coastal turned to relief pitch Mike Morrison, who got a strikeout, ground out and fly out to limit the damage.

The Eagles added a run in the fourth. Babe Thomas singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ashbill followed with an RBI double to center field.

Winthrop pushed its advantage to three with a run in the sixth inning. Ashbill reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Spires singled up the middle, but an error on the play allowed Ashbill to score.

The Eagles did have nine hits and walked twice, but only one of their three runs was earned. Zack Hopeck (2-1) was saddled with the loss. He struck out four in two-plus innings and allowed six hit but the lone run he surrendered was unearned.

Coastal Carolina will hit the road for a Tuesday game at Wake Forest. First pitch in Winston-Salem is set for 6 pm. The Chanticleers will return to Springs Brooks Stadium for a three-game series with Big South foe Longwood. Game times are 6 pm on Thursday, 7 pm on Friday (ESPN3) and 2 pm on Saturday.
