Coastal Carolina Walks Past The Citadel, 5-1

March 4, 2015

CHARLESTON - With the game tied at 1-1, Coastal Carolina (8-4) scored four runs in the top of the ninth thanks to two walks, a hit by pitch and two wild pitches to claim a 5-1 victory at The Citadel (5-6) Wednesday evening at Riley Park.

While the Bulldog pitching staff struggled late, the Chanticleers were dominant on the mound in the late innings. The Citadel hit an RBI single - one of just four hits by the Bulldogs - with one out in the seventh inning to tie the game. From that point, Coastal's Mike Morrison (1-0) and Austin Kerr did not allow another ball to be put in play, recording strikeouts for the final eight outs - five by Morrison in 1.2 innings and three by Kerr in one inning - with one walk.

Overall, seven CCU pitchers combined to strikeout 16 Bulldogs, the most K's by The Citadel since fanning 19 times versus South Carolina on February 19, 2003.

Coastal Carolina got on the scoreboard first. With two out in the top of the fourth, Casey Schroeder hit a solo home run into a stiff wind down the right field line for a 1-0 Chanticleer lead.

The Citadel tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on first and second, William Kinney lined a ball to left field. Al Molina made a diving attempt, but was ruled to have trapped the ball allowing pinch runner Clay Martin to score from second.

In the ninth, G.K. Young singled, Schroeder walked and David Parrett was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Anthony Marks walked to force home pinch runner Josh Crump. Kevin Connell then threw a pair of wild pitches to bring home Schroeder and Parrett, respectively. The final run scored when Connor Owings reached on an error.

Shane Sawczak started on the mound for Coastal, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Andrew Beckwith, Brock Hunter and Bobby Holmes each pitched one scoreless inning. Beckwith struck out all three batters he faces and Homes fanned two.

Skylar Hunter (1-2) suffered the loss.

The Chanticleers will return to action this weekend hosting the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The final tournament for Coastal will feature Akron, Michigan, Michigan State, Toledo and UMBC.
