GEORGETOWN - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team weathered adverse course conditions, a wash out round and numerous hours of delays to win the 2015 Big South Women's Golf Championship. The Chanticleers shot a 36-hole 614 tally to capture the championship by 16 strokes over Campbell. In addition, junior Lena Schaeffner claimed medalist honors after posting a two-round score of 147.
The championship victory is the seventh in Coastal's history and fourth under head coach Katie Quinney. Coastal's seven titles set the Big South record, breaking a tie with Charleston Southern, while Quinney's fourth championship matches Campbell head coach John Crooks for the most in league history.
Coastal, which holds the No. 46 ranking according to Golfstat, carded a round-best 25-over 313 Wednesday en route to its 614 36-hole score. Campbell finished second at the championship, which was originally scheduled as a 54-hole event and shortened to a 36-hole tournament due to the torrential rainfall along the Grand Strand, with a 54-over 630 (314-316). Radford finished third (315-323=638) followed by Charleston Southern (326-317=643), Gardner-Webb (314-330=644), Longwood (325-324=649), Winthrop (321-332=653), High Point (326-327=653) and Presbyterian College (343-357=700).
Schaeffner, who was named the Golfer of the Year prior to the championship, claimed a one-stroke victory over teammate and Big South Freshman of the Year Malene Krolboll Hansen. Schaeffner is the ninth Chanticleer to be crowned championship medalist and the first since Brittany Henderson won her second straight in 2013. Schaeffner, who is ranked 66th in the nation by Golfstat, finished the championship 3-over par.
The medalist honor was the third for Schaeffner this season, making her the first Chanticleer to win three events in a single season.
The field again played through adverse weather conditions Wednesday. Light rain started to fall around 8:50 a.m. before turning into showers at approximately 10:40 a.m. Play was interrupted shortly thereafter due to a 47-minute lightning delay, but resumed at 11:33 a.m. The rest of the round featured intermittent rain and windy conditions, leading to the higher scores.
Schaeffner carded a 2-over par 74 on the final round of the championship. She was as low as 2-under through 14 holes before playing the final four holes 4-over as she and the field battled a prevailing headwind after making the turn toward the clubhouse.
Hansen was tied with Schaeffner after 15 holes, but a bogey on 16 cost her a chance to force a playoff with her teammate. She closed the round with a 4-over 76 en route to her 4-over par 148 36-hole score. She ranked second in the field with 28 pars and tied for fourth with three birdies.
Emee Herbert turned in an 8-over 80 on Wednesday to place eighth overall with a two-day score of 156 (+12). She was 2-over through seven holes, but battled back to even-par with birdies on 8 and 11. However, her round was undone late as she played the final three holes 8-over.
Frida Castillo and Bailey Cocca tied for 19th in the field after posting identical rounds of 80 and 83 for a 163 total. Castillo finished the tournament with three birdies, while Cocca carded two.
The Chanticleers will now await their automatic NCAA Regional assignment at one of four locations in the nation. Selections will be announced on Monday, April 27, and the Regionals will be conducted May 7-9.
