RALEIGH, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team combined to shoot a 2-over par 290, including a hole-in-one by All-American candidate Lena Schaeffner, to move eight positions up the leaderboard at the NCAA Raleigh Regional, played at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the campus of NC State. The Chanticleers are in fourth-place after 36-holes of the 54-hole tournament, with the top six teams advancing to the NCAA National Championship.
South Carolina (295-286=581), ranked second by Golfstat, leads the 18-team field after 36 holes of play. The Gamecocks posted the day's best round at 2-under and currently lead No. 31 Alabama (294-295=589) by eight strokes. No. 7 LSU (288-304=592) is third, followed by the 49th-ranked Chanticleers (303-290=593). The Chants lead No. 15 Northwestern (302-292=594) by a stroke and sixth-place teams No. 40 Ohio State (292-304=596) No. 42 NC State (290-306=596) by three strokes.
Schaeffner, as she has much of the season, led Coastal during the second round with a 2-under 68. She is currently tied for third with a 1-under 143 two-round score. The junior's day started with back-to-back birdies and five pars before recording the first ace of her golfing career on the par-3, 125-yard 17th hole. She stuck her pitching wedge perfectly and the ball landed just past a greenside bunker, bounced once on the green and into the hole, marking just the fourth hole-in-one in CCU program history and first since Brittany Henderson's in October 2011. Following her hole-in-one, Schaeffner made par on 18 to make the turn at 4-under; she played her next six holes even, despite a bogey on hole one. She then posted back-to-back bogeys on holes seven and eight before sinking a two-foot par putt on nine to compete her 2-under round.
Finishing with the Chants' second-lowest score of the day was freshman Malene Krolboll Hansen, who bounced back from Thursday's opening-round 78 to card an even-par 72. She is tied for 31st overall (78-72=150). Hansen played her front nine 1-over, despite being plus-3 after five holes. She made par on her first three back-nine holes, then moved back to even with a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. Another par was followed by a bogey on six and two-more pars. She closed the round with a birdie putt on nine to notch her 12th round of par or better this season.
Both Frida Castillo and Bailey Cocca shot rounds of 2-over 74 on the day. Castillo (75-74=149) improved a stoke over her opening 75 and is tied for 25th on the individual leaderboard, while Cocca (77-74=151) shaved three strokes off her first round 77 and is tied for 37th. Castillo played her front nine three over with a birdie and four bogeys, then carded a 1-under on her back nine with a birdie and eight pars. Cocca was even through 13 holes after erasing an early birdie with a bogey on her sixth hole. She moved to 2-over after bogeys on holes five and seven, but ended strong with a pair of pars.
Rounding out the Chanticleer contingent was senior Emee Herbert with an 88. Her two-round score of 166 (78-88) is 92nd overall.
Coastal tees off on the final round of play at 8:24 a.m. The Chanticleers will be paired with competitors from Northwestern and Ohio State.
