SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team won its season opener in a 2-1 decision at Wofford. This is the first Chanticleer season opener win since 2009.
Wofford scored early in the first five minutes of the match but the Chants continued to pressure Wofford's defense throughout the first half and answered with two second half goals to win the game.
Senior Mikayla Williams put one away in the 62nd minute of the second half to tie it up, 1-1. Williams dribbled down the sideline and beat two Wofford defenders to slide the ball past the keeper. This was Williams' first career goal.
"I'm glad that I could I contribute to the team and start off on a good note. This team is ready for war this season and we wanted to come out strong," Williams said..
The Chants continued to pressure the Terriers in the second half creating more scoring opportunities. With 10 minutes left in the second half, freshman Tara Lyons scored her first goal of her career to push the Chants into the lead. Lyons capitalized on a bouncing ball from a cross and volleyed it in to the low left corner of the goal.
"It was a good response from the team after a challenging first half. We had a lot of players play tonight and made great contributions to get the win. I'm very happy to leave Wofford with a win tonight," said head coach Paul Hogan.
Of the two shots Coastal had in the second half, they capitalized on both to slide past the Wofford Terriers.
The Chanticleers will continue on the road, traveling to Charlotte, N.C., to take on the 49ers this Sunday at 2 p.m.
