CONWAY - Ohio State hit three home runs -- two by Brady Cherry -- to account for all of its runs as the Buckeyes held on for a 6-4 victory versus #19 Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium as part of the 17th Annual Caravelle Resort's Baseball at the Beach.
Ohio State (4-1-1) took advantage of four walks and two home runs to score five runs in the fourth and a solo home run in the eighth for its sixth run of the game.
The Chanticleers (3-2), which out-hit the Buckeyes 14-8, brought the winning run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Yianni Pavlopoulos recorded strikeouts on both occasions to earn his first save of the season.
Coastal's Cameron Pearcey (2-for-3) broke up an impressive start by Ohio State pitcher Tanner Tully (2-0), who struck out five of the first eight batters he faced. Pearcey hit his first collegiate home run, a shot to left field, to give the Chants' a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Michael Paez (2-for-5), Anthony Marks and Zach Remillard (2-for-5) followed with consecutive singles to load the bases. Paez came home on a passed ball for a 2-0 CCU advantage.
The Buckeyes answered with five runs on just two hits in the fourth. After a pair of walks, Nick Sergakis cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left center field. Three batters later, Cherry hit the second home run of the inning and drove in Zach Ratcliff, who reached on a walk.
With one out in the sixth, Kevin Woodall Jr. and Connor Owings (2-for-4) had back-to-back hits. After a wild pitch, Pinch hitter Tyler Chadwick came through with an RBI ground out to cut the Chanticleer deficit to two, 5-3.
Ohio State pushed its advantage back to three runs, 6-3, in the eighth when Cherry hit his second home run of the day.
Coastal responded a run in the home half of the eighth. G.K. Young hit a leadoff single and Woodall was hit by a pitch. Owings followed with an RBI single to make the score 6-4.
In the ninth with two outs, Marks walked, Remillard (2-for-4) singled and G.K. Young walked to load the base before Pavlopoulos struck out pinch hitter Peyton Isaacson to end the game.
Tully scattered nine hits in allowing three runs, but he walked none and fanned nine. Pavlopoulos worked the final 1.2 innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out four.
Alex Cunningham (0-1) suffered the loss. He allowed two hits and five runs with four walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Andrew Beckwith kept CCU in the game. He scattered six hits and allowed one run.
