Chanticleers Win 41-Team Tournament

KIAWAH ISLAND - Coastal Carolina fired a season-best round of 282 en route to an 871 54-hole score and the team title at the 2016 Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic, contested on both the Osprey and Oak Point golf courses on the property of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

The Chanticleers' 6-under score Tuesday ties for the third-best 18-holes score in program history, merely a stoke away from tying the school record. Coastal's 54-hole score of 871 (291-298-282) bested runner-up Chattanooga (283-313-283=879) by eight strokes. The host Cougars 290-299-295=884) finished third followed by Old Dominion in fourth (293-306-290=889). Elon rounded out the top-five in the 41-team field with an 896 (297-301-298).

The tournament title was the 23rd in Chanticleer history and 14th under the direction of head coach Katie Quinney since she began leading the program during the spring of 2009.

Each Chanticleer shot par or better during the third and final round leaving Malene Krolboll Hansen's even-par 72 as the day's drop score. Bailey Cocca led the charge with her career-best 3-under round of 69. Lena Schaeffner, Barbora Bakova and Marie Lunackova each shot 1-under round of 71. In all, the Chanticleer contingent combined to card 15 birdies and only nine bogeys during the final 18 holes of competition.

Hansen was Coastal's highest individual finisher in the 216-competitor field, totaling a three-round score of 1-under 215 (68-75-72). The top-five event finish is Hansen's first this season and third of her career. She finished the tournament ranked eighth in the field with 11 total birdies and was of only seven players to record an eagle.

Cocca recorded her highest individual finish of the season as she tied for ninth with a 2-over 218. She carded rounds of 75 and 74 before turning in her 3-under 69. She co-led the tournament with 13 total birdies, including four on Tuesday. In addition, she paced the field in par-5 scoring, as she played the key scoring holes a combined 7-under throughout the three-day event.

Bakova turned in a 1-under 71 on to tie for 13 overall with a score of 220 (+4). She was 2-over through four holes, but battled back to even-par with birdies on 5 and 13 before moving to 1-under with a birdie putt on her 54th and final holes of the tournament. Bakova closed the event in a three-way tie for the most pars with 41.

Schaeffner placed a stroke behind Bakova in a tie for 15th with a 5-over 221. The senior All-American candidate started the tournament with a 74, then shot a 76 before closing with her 71, marking her 31st round of par or better in her collegiate career. Schaeffner's final round was relatively steady as she countered a bogey with two birdies and 15 pars.

Lunackova has carded 1-under 71 during the final round to produce her 11-over 227 score. The freshman improved each of the final two tournament round after posting a first-round 82. She then shot a 74 on Monday before closing her fifth collegiate event with her third career round of par or better.

The Chanticleers return to the links March 7-8 at the Bay Area Intercollegiate contested at Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
