CONWAY - Tyler Poole struck out a career-high seven and four Chanticleers hit home run to lead #22 Coastal Carolina to a 12-4 victory Sunday morning over Illinois in the first of two games for CCU on the day.
Poole (3-1) allowed six hits and two runs with a walk and his seven K's in earning the win. Mike Morrison entered the game with CCU clinging to a 7-4 lead in the seventh, recorded a strikeout and worked the final 2.1 innings to earn his first save of the season.
Offensively, Anthony Marks was 3-for-5 while Michael Paez, G.K. Young, Zach Remillard and Connor Owings all hit home runs.
Coastal Carolina sent nine men to the plate in the first to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Paez was hit by a pitch and scored from first base on a two-out double by Remillard. After a walk to Owings, Tyler Chadwick hit a two-run double to right field. A walk to Billy Cooke setup an RBI single from Seth Lancaster to bring home Chadwick.
Owings gave the Chants a 5-0 lead with a solo home run in the third inning, marking his first round-tripper of the season.
Illinois cut its deficit to three, 5-2, thanks to a pair an RBI doubles in the fourth innings. Doran Turchin reached on a single and moved to third on a Pat McInerney double. Mark Skonieczny followed with an RBI ground out and Jack Yalowitz brought home McInerney with an RBI double.
Coastal got those two runs back in the home half of the fourth. For the second time in the game, Paez was hit by a pitch and Young followed with a blast to left center field, his fourth homer of the season.
Illinois pinch hitter Jalin McMillan started the seventh with a solo home run to make the score 7-3 in CCU's favor. Two batters later Adam Walton reached on an infield single and scored on a two-out, RBI double by Anthony Drago.
In the eighth inning, Coastal pushed its lead to 11-4. Lancaster and Marks singled and Paez cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left field, his first bomb of the season. Two batters later, Remillard matched Paez with a solo home run to left field. Remillard now has seven home runs for the season.
