Coastal's Streak Ends With Loss to Elon

March 22, 2016

Final Stats

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team suffered its first loss in nearly a month on Tuesday afternoon, falling 5-2 to Elon at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex to snap a seven-match winning streak. It was also Coastal's first loss in 19 matches on its home courts since the facility opened prior to the 2015 season.

The loss is just Coastal's third of the year, and drops the Chants' overall record to 13-3. Elon improves to 12-4 with the win.

"Elon is an excellent squad and they won the close ones today to take the match," said Chanticleer coach Chris Powers. "We fought hard and I know we will take this defeat and put it into our work on the practice court tomorrow. We're on the road for the next two weeks so we need to be ready."

The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead early in the match after winning a hard-fought doubles point.

Elon's second pairing of Robert Lindgren and Mario Paccini struck first with a 6-3 win over Sebastian Schneider and Jabor Al-Mutawa. Coastal then evened the point on the first court as Vuk Velickovic and Pedro Leme won their 12th consecutive match together with a 7-6 tiebreaker over Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic.

The doubles point was decided on the third court by a second tiebreaker, as Neal Port and Salvador Mijares edged Rick Timmerman and Luiz Faria in a 7-6 decision.

Elon jumped out to a 3-0 lead as play shifted to singles, taking the fifth and fourth courts in straight sets. Tomic bested Faria at No. 5, and Mijares topped Schneider at No. 4 in the only matches of the day that did not reach a third set.

Nic Planchard delivered Coastal's first point of match at No.6 with a three-set win over Felipe Osses-Konig, but it would not be enough as Felipe Sarrasague sealed the win for Elon at No. 2 in three sets over Velickovic. The loss for Velickovic was his first in seven matches.

The match concluded with three-set wins by Al-Mutawa at No. 1 and Lindgren at No. 3.

Tuesday's match marked Coastal's last against a nonconference opponent during the regular season. The Chants play their next four matches at Big South schools -- beginning with Radford at noon on Saturday -- before returning home to close the regular season with a 2 p.m. match against Liberty.
