GEORGETOWN, S.C. - After battling prevailing winds on the final day of the 2016 Big South Women's Golf Championships, Coastal Carolina carded a 313 for a 54-hole total of 904 to finish runner-up at the par 72, 6,082-yard DeBordieu Club in Georgetown.
Campbell won the team title with a 30-over 894, while Fighting Camel Nadine White won individual medalist with a 3-over 219.
Joining White on the Big South All-Tournament Team by way of their top-five finishes were Campbell's Annelie Sjoholm and Tahnia Ravnjak, along with Chanticleers Malene Krolboll Hansen, Lena Schaeffner and Bailey Cocca and Charleston Southern's Hayley McNeill.
Coastal finished 12 strokes ahead of third-place Charleston Southern (302-301-313=916). Winthrop (310-299-319=928) and Gardner-Webb (313-310-337=960) rounded out the top-five in the nine-team field.
In addition, the Big South announced its annual award winners on Wednesday afternoon. The awards were voted on by the head coaches prior to the championship and are based on regular season performances. Campbell's White was voted Golfer of the Year, while Coastal's Marie Lunackova was voted Freshman of the Year. Campbell's John Crooks was voted Coach of the Year, and Schaeffner was honored as Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Big South's Sports Information Directors. Furthermore, Schaeffner, Hansen and Cocca were named to all-conference and Lunackova was named to the all-freshman team.
Hansen tied for third overall with an 8-over 224. She posted a 3-over 75 during her final round after opening the tournament with rounds of 77 and 72. Hansen co-led the field through the tournament with 38 pars, while ranking third in par-3 scoring (-1).
Schaeffner and Cocca carded 81s on the final round of the championship to tie for fifth with 226 totals. Schaeffner finished the event with 31 pars and seven birdies, while Cocca turned in 33 pars and six birdies. Cocca also led the 44-competitor field on the par-5s, playing the holes a combined 2-under.
Marie Lunackova turned in a 4-over 76 on Wednesday to tie for 15th overall with a three-day score of 234 (+18). Barbora Bakova tied for 21st on the leaderboard with a 237 after posting and 82 on the final round. Bakova finished the tournament with four birdies, while Lunackova carded two.
Chanticleers Await Regional Announcement
Coastal Carolina awaits word on an NCAA regional bid. The regionals are set for May 5-5 at four locations: Alabama, LSU, Stanford and Texas A&M.
