Coastal Carolina Cross Country Competes at USC Upstate

USC Upstate Women's Results Get Acrobat Reader

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's cross country team competed at the USC Upstate Invitational, Saturday (Sept. 30) morning in Spartanburg. The men's team finished eighth of 11 teams, in the 8k and the women's team placed fourth of 11, in the 5k.

The men's event was won by unattached runner Adam Freudenthall with 24:37.5 and the women's top finisher was unattached runner Letitia Saayman, former CCU distance runner, with her time of 16:58.2.

Men's | 8th of 11 -- 188 Points

Hutson Baumann was the top Chanticleer finisher in the 8k event. Baumann scored six points but finished eighth overall, with his time 25:35.3.

In 39th and scoring 28 points, Andrew Avery finished with a time of 27:07.5, Andrew Southard was the next Chant to cross the finish line coming in 55th with 27:40.0 and scoring 41 points.

Michael Pieterse finished 70th with 28:03.7 to score 53 points and closing out the scoring for CCU Doug Mullen scored 60 points placing 84th with a time of 28:48.1.

East Tennessee State finished in first with 32 points followed by Appalachian State (53 points), Wofford (139 points), USC Upstate (145 points) and Western Carolina (160 points) finished the top five teams.

Women's | 4th of 11 -- 118 Points

The top Chanticleer finisher was Lisha van Onselen for the third event in a row, scoring one point and finishing in second with 17:39.1.

Rachel Byrd finished in 14th scoring 11 points 18:35.7, followed by Alyssa LeClaire in 28th with 18:53.1 to score 20 points.

Kayla Tracy and Taylor Creagh closed out the scoring for Coastal. Tracy finished 50th to score 37 points with 19:36.3, while Creagh placed 72nd to score 49 points in a time of 20:11.6.

East Tennessee State and Sun Belt opponent Appalachian State paced the team event finishing in a tie for first with 48 points, former Big South rival Campbell finished in third with 92 points, followed by CCU in fourth and Western Carolina (157 points) closed out the top five.

Coastal Carolina will next travel to High Point, N.C., Friday (Oct. 13) to compete in the HPU VertCross Invitational at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex. The race is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
