CONWAY – The Chanticleer defense totaled 61 digs and 12 blocks in just three sets of action as Coastal Carolina swept Troy (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) Friday evening in Sun Belt volleyball action at the HTC Center.
Both totals are season highs for Coastal (8-11, 7-4 SBC) in three-set matches this year, and the 12 blocks are the Chants' highest in any match this season. Troy (10-4, 4-7 SBC) was limited to hitting .063 for the match as the Trojans were held below 20 points in each of the three sets.
Five Chants recorded blocks in the match.
Anett Nemeth led all players with seven rejections, including four solo efforts.
Dora Lulic had five blocks, and
Kaylah House had two.
Kyla Manning and
Sara Boothe tallied one each.
Sydney Alvis recorded 25 of Coastal's 61 digs to lead the match.
The Chants performed similarly well offensively, totaling 38 kills and 37 assists with a .320 hitting percentage in the sweep.
Nemeth was the only player to reach double figures in kills as she tallied 11. Five Chants hit above .250 on the night, with Lulic's .800 hitting percentage leading the way. Manning had nine kills at a .348 clip, and
Ani Bozdeva put down eight while hitting .259.
Sara Boothe led Coastal with 25 assists.
Coastal won the opening set thanks to a pair of 4-0 runs. The first series of four consecutive points tied the match early at 7-7. The second 4-0 run gave the Chants the lead for good as they went on to win the set 25-17.
The Chants and Trojans were tied late in the second set at 17-17 before Coastal won eight of the next 10 points to take a 2-0 match lead. Nemeth had five kills in the set and the Chants hit .308 as a team. Defensively, Coastal recorded 18 digs and three blocks to limit Troy's hitting percentage to .048.
Coastal saved its best defensive performance for the final set as the Chants tallied 24 digs and five blocks to finish off the match. Four of those blocks occurred during an impressive 9-1 stretch for Coastal that gave the Chants a commanding 17-8 lead.
Coastal is back in action at the HTC Center on Sunday hosting South Alabama at 12:30 p.m.
