Foley, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team had their season come to a halt in heartbreak fashion, losing 3-2, in overtime, to Georgia State in the quarterfinal round of the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championship Wednesday evening at the Foley Sports Complex.
The loss dropped the Chants record to 8-8-1 while the Panthers improved to 8-9-2. Georgia State will next face No. 2 seed Little Rock on Friday.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Lily Barron fired a low cross from the right wing to beat the Chanticleer goalkeeper. Caitlin Ray picked up the assist.
Coastal answered back to level the match up at 1-1 when
Abby Gashel fired a strike from distance in the eighth minute and
Hannah Miller picked up the dish.
Both teams closed out the first half trading possessions and working for the go ahead goal. Georgia State outshot the Chants 7-4 overall and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Kylie Bostick,
Mackenzie Gibbs, and Miller had the other three shots for CCU with Bostick coming close to finding the net on a rocket off a free kick.
In the second period, the Chanticleers applied the early pressure and captured the momentum along with a 2-1 lead when Miller found the back of the net in the 61st minute after dribbling into an open space and firing a strike to the far post just inside the 18 yard box.
Each team traded possessions with the Panthers slowly chipping away at a stout CCU defense, finally getting the equalizing goal when Ray booted a shot by the diving goalkeeper in the 82nd minute sending the match into sudden death overtime.
Georgia State won the coin toss and took the momentum swing into their offensive end getting the opportunity at a corner kick which Monique Hundley fired a cross into the box allowing Brooke Shank to close out the match 3-2 with the header in the 94th minute.
Coastal was outshot 18-9 overall and 8-3 in corner kicks for the match. Miller paced the team with three shots and Gibbs had two.
The match marked the end for three Chanticleer seniors;
Lauren Dabner,
Brooke Horist, and Gashel.
