Third Quarter Dooms Chants in Loss at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team saw a six-point halftime lead erased as Texas State outscored the Chants 25-9 in the third quarter en route to a 73-58 win over Coastal in Sun Belt action Thursday night at Strahan Arena.
 
Coastal (8-6, 0-3 SBC) was held to 2-14 from the field in the third quarter as Texas State (8-7, 3-0 SBC) built a double-digit lead that held for the remainder of the game.
 
Naheria Hamilton recorded her third double-double of the season as she tied for the team scoring lead with 10 points and led the game with 13 rebounds. Kaylin West and DJ Williams joined Hamilton with 10 points each.
 
Texas State likewise had a trio of double-digit scorers. Brooke Holle led all players with 19 points, with Toshua Leavitt (16) and Jayla Johnson (12) following.
 
The Bobcats held advantages in both FG shooting and rebounding, and scored 22 of their points off 20 Coastal turnovers.
 
Coastal led 32-26 at the end of the first half after scoring 12 unanswered points in the four minutes prior to the halftime break. Hamilton led the charge, scoring all seven of her first-half points during that stretch. The junior center also hauled in 10 of her 13 rebounds in the opening half.
 
Coastal held Leavitt, the Sun Belt's leading scorer, to just two points in the opening half on 1-9 from the field. Leavitt rebounded with 14 points in the second half on 4-4 from behind the 3-point arc and 2-2 at the free-throw line.
 
Texas State had two big runs in the third quarter, scoring nine unanswered points in a little over two minutes, and later 10 unanswered points in the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 13-point lead. The Bobcats finished the quarter 11-14 from the field.
 
The fourth quarter saw Texas State hit all five of its 3-point attempts as it continued to add to its lead.
 
Up next, Coastal will look to pick up its first Sun Belt victory on Saturday at UTA when the Chants and Mavs tip-off from College Park Center at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
