Chanticleers Fall to UTA in Five Sets at Home on Sunday

Coastal volleyball falls to 2-3 in five-set matches this season

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball dropped their second consecutive Sun Belt Conference volleyball match on Sunday afternoon, this time in five sets (3-2) against the UT Arlington Mavericks at The HTC Center. Coastal sophomore Anett Nemeth led all hitters in the match with a career-high 32 kills, but CCU's conference record now falls to 8-3 and 18-4 overall.

Coastal Carolina used a pair of runs of five and three points in set one to give themselves a 13-9 advantage. During that run, the Chanticleers had committed no errors and were led by Nemeth and Manning's three kills apiece.

The Mavs worked their way back into the set to take a 14-13 lead when they reeled off five consecutive points of their own including taking advantage of three Coastal Carolina miscues. CCU's attack was perfect over their final 11 points, putting the ball away seven times with no errors. The Chants hit .312 with 18 kills on 42 attempts in the 25-23 set one victory.

Nemeth's nine kills in the first stanza led all players, five more than any other player on the floor.

UTA tied the match at one set apiece by the score of 25-20 as they were able to improve their hitting percentage from .278 to .323. Coastal's serving was a problem in the set as they committed five errors.

Coming out of the five-minute break, the Chanticleer's offense focused on their All-Sun Belt performer Nemeth. The Pecel, Hungary native was up for the challenge as she had seven kills on 11 attempts with a .692 hitting percentage. Nemeth led CCU to a win in the third set by the score of 25-20. The opposite hitter had double the number of points of any other player in the set.

In set four, the Mavericks dominated from the outset and tied the match at two sets apiece. Arlington jumped out to a 12-7 lead, but Coastal closed the deficit to two points on kills by junior Hannah Emerson, senior Maria Levanova, and Manning. However, UTA was able to pull away from CCU and win 25-18. The Mavs held Nemeth to four kills in the fourth set, while they had four-team blocks. Kylie Jedlicka and Bre Walp had five kills each in the set fourth-set win.

In the fifth and final set, Coastal Carolina was never able to capture the offensive rhythm it had earlier in the match. They never held a lead in the final period as UT Arlington was able to get to eight points first before both teams switched sides of the court. The Mavs kept the momentum after the change as they scored seven of the last 12 points for the match victory. Madison Hill had four of the team's eight kills. UTA went on to win 15-11 and held CCU to a .048 hitting percentage while hitting .400 hitting for themselves.

For Coastal, Nemeth hit .379 on 66 attempts with just six errors. Petrenko had a match-high 55 assists, while Manning pitched in with 14 kills.

Each team had a trio of players with double-digit digs. Madelyn St. Germain had a team-high 18 kills for UT Arlington and freshman libero Lina Perugini led the Chants with 16.

Jedlicka led the Mavs with 17 kills and Jessica Standcliff had a team-high 27 assists.

CCU has lost their last three five-set matches, after starting off with wins versus ETSU and Towson.

The Chanticleers return to action on Friday, Nov.1 as they travel to South Alabama for the first of two matches in Alabama. CCU will turn around and play again on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they visit Troy.
