Round 1 Leaders
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Coastal Carolina women's golf team shot a first-round nine-over 289 to finish tied for seventh-place after day one of play at the Princess Anne Invitational.
Freshman
Caitlin Evans-Brand was the match-setter for the Chanticleers with a three-under 67 on the par-70, 5,824-yard course. Evans-Brand collected her score with a two-under 33 on the first nine holes and followed that with a one-under 34 on her second nine. She led the Chants with five birdies on the day to go along with her two bogeys. Her birdie total was tied for the most on the day.
Her three-under 67 score is tied for the third-lowest 18-hole score in CCU history. Her three-under is tied for the fifth-best round in the history of the program. She is in a three-way tie for second heading into tomorrow's second round.
The other participants were all consistent in their play with three players shooting a four-over 74 while the fifth shot a five-over 75.
With the team playing holes 10-18 to open the round,
Sophia Carlsen shot her 74 shooting a 36-38.
Tiffany Arafi picked up her score with a 37-37 while
Jenjira Jinangkul shot a 40 during her first nine holes, but came back to shoot a 34 on the next nine to finish with her score of 74. All three players are tied at 48th entering tomorrow's action.
Heidrun Hylnsdottir was only one shot behind the trio, finishing her day with a five-over 75. She opened the day shooting a 39 but was able to knock three strokes off that score with a 36 in her second nine. She will go into second round action tied for 60th.
The Chanticleers will head into tomorrow's second round tied with Sacramento State at nine-over, which is only three shots out of fourth-place. While the Chants had a solid day, they struggled on the par-fives on the course, where they finished seven-over on those four holes.
Coastal strung together 12 birdies on the day which was tied for the fourth-most in the opening round.
Virginia Tech leads after the opening round shooting a four-under 276. LSU is the other team to finish under par after carding a one-under 279. Chattanooga is in third-place with an opening round of even par 280.
Rounding out the top five are Central Florida and the College of Charleston who are tied after shooting a six-over 286.
