Chanticleers Fall in Five Sets at Troy

TROY, ALA. –  On Saturday night, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team played their third five-set match in as many times out. Sophomore Anett Nemeth recorded a school-record 33 kills, but the Chanticleers fell by the score of 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25 and 17-15. The Chants relinquished first-place in the Sun Belt East with the loss to Troy and now drop to 9-3 in the conference and 19-5 overall.

In set one, Troy was able to take the lead by the score of 15-13 as Cheyenne Hayes and Halston Hillier led the charge with three kills apiece. The Chants would turn around the set by winning the next three points to take a 16-15 lead as Nemeth recorded consecutive block assists alongside of redshirt junior Christina Nance.

The Chanticleers would not trail the rest of the way in the first set as they defeated the Trojans by the score of 25-21. Nemeth would be clutch over her team's final nine points with four of her eight kills.

The Chants held the lead just once in set two by the score of 2-1, but unanswered runs of three and four points propelled Troy to a 25-20 set two win. Ashley Guenveur led the Trojans in set two with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .500 (7-of-11) with one error.

Coming off the set two loss, Coastal Carolina never trailed in the third set as the Chants broke open the game with four consecutive points to extend their lead to 15-10. The Chanticleers went on to win the set by the score of 25-20 as they were able to hit .455 (13-of-22) with just two errors. Nemeth had a set-high six kills and hit an outstanding .857 (6-of-7) with no errors in the frame.

Just as one team was able to take a lead in set four, the opposition would rally off consecutive points to retake the lead. Six times in the fourth set, the lead would change or be tied.

With Troy holding the largest lead of the fourth set by the score of 20-16, the Chants would pull within one point as junior Haylie Beck connected on her second service ace of the night and Nemeth had her eighth kill of the set. Both squads exchanged 3-0 runs over the next six points, but with Troy holding a 23-22 lead, Hillier and Guenveur forced a fifth set on back-to-back kills to give Troy the 25-22 set four win.

Nemeth had nine kills in set four as she hit .438, but Troy held the CCU team to a .242 hitting percentage. No other Chanticleer player had more than three kills in the set.

In decisive fifth set, there were nine ties and four lead changes. The Chanticleers had two match points to earn the win but each time Troy was able to stave off the loss. Troy's Hayes tied the match at 15 all with a kill and two points later, she added her eighth kill of the night to give her team the 17-15 win.

Neither team was efficient in terms of hitting percentage in set five. Troy hit .188 (7-of-16) with four errors while the Chanticleers hit .000 (8-of-20) with eight errors.

The Chanticleers' Ani Bozdeva was the only player to record double-digit kills outside of Nemeth with 11. Freshman setter Brigitta Petrenko led the team with 49 assists while freshman libero Lina Perugini had a team-high 12 digs.

Guenveur led the Trojans with 21 kills while Hillier added 15 kills of her own in the win.

Trojan setter Amara Anderson had a match-high 55 assists and libero Lacey Jeffcoat had a match-high 17 digs.

Coastal Carolina will return to the court as the Chants will travel to Georgia State on Friday, Nov. 8 with the first serve set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
