Foley, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to the Georgia State Panthers 1-0 in the opening round of the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Championships in Foley, Ala., on Wednesday night. The Chanticleers end their season with an overall record of 7-9-2 while the Panthers improved to 9-8-2 and advanced to the second round on Friday versus No. 1 South Alabama.
In the opening stanza, the Chants were outshot 6-5 despite controlling the ball for most of the period. Coastal senior
Hannah Miller led the offensive attack with two shots and had an opportunity stolen away in the 35th minute when she had the Georgia State goalkeeper beat only for the Panthers' defense to recover and steal the ball deep in their third of the field. Of the five first half CCU shots, four were on goal.
After the intermission, Georgia State pressed its offensive attack getting off 11 second-half shots. The biggest strike came from Jimena Cabrero on a corner kick in the 79th minute that curled its way through the mass of players in front of the goal that came to rest in the far corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Coastal was outshot 17-8 for the match with Miller recording a total of four shots and putting three on frame while
Loranna Austin,
Gabby Smychynsky,
Mackenzie Cherry, and
Brayleigh Jones each had one attempt apiece.
The match marked the final Chanticleer match for senior's Miller, Smychynsky,
Heston Neal,
Kylie Bostick,
Baylee Price, and
Kiera Heslam.
