DELAND, Fla. – Following its 5-0 sweep of No. 5 Austin Peay to open the 2019 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship Thursday morning, No. 4 Coastal Carolina suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 1 Stetson Thursday afternoon in the tournament's quarterfinals.
Following the loss in Thursday's second match, Coastal (20-10) drops to the lower portion of the
double-elimination bracket. The Chants will be back in action Friday at 9:30 a.m. ET taking on No. 6 North Alabama (10-11), which suffered a 5-0 sweep to No. 3 Florida Gulf Coast Thursday morning. Coastal defeated North Alabama twice to close out the regular season, winning by scores of 3-2 and 4-1.
Despite the loss, Thursday afternoon's match marked the first time in program history that Coastal won a point against Stetson, which entered the tournament ranked eighth nationally.
Coastal's top pairing of
Sydney Alvis and
Leah Hardeman earned the point, defeating Stetson's first-team All-ASUN pairing of Carly Perales and Sunniva Helland-Hansen in three sets, 21-17, 12-21, 15-12.
However, Alvis' and Hardeman's win came after Stetson had already clinched the match with sweeps of the fifth, fourth, third and second courts.
Friday's matches will once again be broadcast on
ESPN+ and have
live scoring available.
