ATLANTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team picked up an important Sun Belt Conference win on the road Saturday afternoon, shutting out league-leading Georgia State at the GSU Clarkston Courts.
Coastal improves to 13-7 (3-2 SBC) with the win. Previously undefeated GSU falls to 12-9 (4-1 SBC).
"An incredible effort from the men in teal today against the Sun Belt leader," said head coach
Chris Powers. "Our mentality was excellent the entire match and I couldn't be prouder of the team today. The challenge now is to carry this approach to tomorrow's match at Georgia Southern in another tough test against a solid team."
GSU's No. 3 doubles pairing started the day with a 6-2 win, but Coastal ultimately captured the doubles points with wins on the first and second courts.
Lawrence Perrin and
Luiz Faria evened up the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1, and
Zak Talic and
Joel Popov tipped the point in Coastal's favor by taking the second court, 6-4.
Gonzalo Achondo put the Chants in front 2-0 with a with a straight-sets singles win at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3. Faria delivered the team's third point of the day, winning the No. 1 point 6-3, 6-2.
Daiki Tanabe completed the shutout with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Coastal plays its final regular season away match at Georgia Southern on Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
