Chants Complete Sun Belt Opening Weekend with 3-1 Win Over Georgia State

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team defeated Georgia State in four sets (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14) Sunday afternoon at the HTC Center, completing its weekend sweep of the Sun Belt schools from Georgia during the opening weekend of conference action.

Coastal improves to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt, while Georgia State falls to 4-9, 0-2.

Coastal's offense was clicking at a .258 rate against the Panthers and three Chants put down double-digit kills. Anett Nemeth led the way with 16 kills at a .364 clip. Kyla Manning followed with 13 kills and a team-best .524 hitting percentage. Mariia Levanova rounded out the group with 12 kills.

Nemeth added 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. As a team the Chants recorded 50 digs, with Lina Perugini accounting for a match-high of 22. The Coastal defense also had eight team blocks, including seven for Christina Nance.

Brigitta Petrenko led all players in both assists and aces with 42 and three, respectively.

After splitting the first two sets, Coastal regained the lead following a 25-19 win in the third. A 6-1 run keyed the Chants' success in the third frame, pushing a 10-9 advantage to a more comfortable 16-10 gap. Levanova landed three kills during that stretch. Coastal also won four of the final five points in the set, three of which included GSU errors.

The final set included a dominant performance from the Chants as they opened with a 6-1 run and closed by winning eight unanswered points. Jelena Prolic served a pair of aces during the closing stretch and GSU was hampered by five attacking errors.

With their home openers out of the way the Chants now begin a four-match road stretch, beginning with road trips to ULM (Oct. 4) and Louisiana (Oct. 5) next weekend.
