Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team dropped its season opener 7-0 to the seventh-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chanticleers fall to 0-1 on the season while the nationally-ranked Demon Deacons start out 1-0 for the year.
In doubles action, the tandem of
Zak Talic and
Daiki Tanabe defeated Morgan Dill and Melios Efstathiou 7-6 (7-3) in a tiebreak.
Gonzalo Achondo and
Pyry Hyrkkonen fell 6-2 to Henri Squire and Eduardo Nava with the doubles point going to Wake Forest due to a win by default for the team of Charles and Jack Parry.
Wake Forest started the singles competition with a 2-0 lead with Charles Parry winning in the No. 6 position by default. At the No. 1 spot, Talic fell to the No. 43 ranked player in singles play Bar Botzer 6-3, 6-0. Achondo dropped the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-1 to Squire.
Hyrkkonen battled in his opening set before falling 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 to Nava at the No. 3 spot. The No. 63rd-ranked Siddhint Banthia dispatched Tanabe 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 position while at No. 5
Francesco Cori was swept 6-0, 6-0 by No. 53 Rrezart Cungu.
The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 in a doubleheader match against USC Upstate. The first match is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
