MOBILE, Ala. – For the second-straight week, Coastal Carolina swept a Sun Belt Conference three-match series as the Chanticleers defeated South Alabama in the final match of the series 3-1 (25-10, 15-25, 25-14, 25-14) on Friday at South Alabama. The Chanticleers remain undefeated on the season at 6-0, with all six matches coming in Sun Belt play, while South Alabama falls to 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
In the opening set, South Alabama grabbed an early 4-3 lead on a kill by Hannah Harris. The lead was short-lived as the Chanticleers scored five-straight points and 12 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 15-6 advantage. Coastal would end the first set 25-10 with a 4-0 run capped by a kill by
Ani Bozdeva.
Coastal Carolina would drop only its second set of the season in set number two. South Alabama, leading 12-10, scored eight unanswered points to take a 20-10 lead. The Chants helped the Jaguars during the run with six errors, including five attack errors. Coastal continued to battle and fought off a pair of set points before South Alabama won 25-15 on a service error by Coastal's
Blaire Fleming.
Inspired by the set two win, South Alabama came out in set three and grabbed a 5-2 advantage capped by a kill and a solo block by Rebecca Walk. Trailing 8-7, Coastal Carolina scored seven of the next eight points to open a 14-9 lead on a service ace by
Brigitta Petrenko. After trading points, the Chanticleers took the set 25-14 by scoring the final eight points of the set.
Coastal came out on fire in the fourth and final set and never looked back as the Chants opened an 8-1 lead. The first four points of the set were scored by the Chants' defense dominating the net and posting four-straight blocks.
Christina Nance assisted on the first three blocks and then took care of the fourth one on her own. Coastal scored 10 of the final 14 points to walk away with a 25-14 victory to close out the match.
Bozdeva and
Anett Nemeth led the Chanticleer offense with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Nance controlled the net as she added three kills to her eight blocks, including a pair of solo blocks. Nemeth and Petrenko were also stellar on defense at the net with four assisted blocks each. Petrenko set the Chants' offense with 26 set assists while libero
Lina Perugini posted 18 digs.
South Alabama was led with 10 kills by Hannah Maddux and Harris added nine kills for the Jaguars. Maddie Soboleski recorded 23 set assists for South Alabama.
The Chanticleers will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 22, as Coastal opens play at home in the HTC Center against Troy in a Sun Belt doubleheader. The first match begins at 11 a.m. ET with the second match of the day beginning at 6 p.m. ET. The third match of the three-match series will be played at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 23.
