CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina volleyball defeated Troy 3-1 (25-23, 25-8, 12-25, 25-21) to complete its third consecutive three-match Sun Belt Conference sweep. The Chanticleers are 9-0 overall and in Sun Belt play and sit at the top of the East Division standings.
The first set opened with seven ties as the teams battled back-and-forth on the scoreboard. With the set tied at 7-7, Coastal scored six unanswered points to take a 13-7 advantage as
Ilse Sinnige served six of the points during the run. After an
Anett Nemeth kill gave the Chants a 23-18 lead, Troy scored five of the next six points to close the gap to 24-23. After failing to connect on three set-points, Coastal called a timeout and then used a Ashley Guenveur attack error to win the opening set 25-23.
The Chants scored the first five points of the second set and never looked back as they cruised to a dominating 25-8 victory. Sinnige was again hot behind the service line as she served seven consecutive points for the Chants during a run that stretched the lead from 14-7 to 22-7.
As impressive as the Chanticleers were in the second set, Troy was equally impressive in the third set as the Trojans fought to push the match to a fourth set. Leading 7-5, Troy scored six-straight points as Caitlin Cooper blasted three kills for the Trojans during the run. Another five-point run gave Troy a 19-7 advantage and Tori Hester eventually ended the set at 25-12 with a service ace.
Coastal Carolina slowly built a lead in the fourth set and took a 20-15 lead on an attack error by Troy's Cooper. The Trojans pulled to within one point at 20-19 with four unanswered points led by a pair of kills by Guenveur. The Chants turned to the defending Sun Belt Player of the Year as Nemeth gave Coastal a 24-21 lead on back-to-back kills.
Jelena Prolic ended the match with a kill to keep the Chants undefeated on the season.
Nemeth paced the Chants with 13 kills, while teammate
Ani Bozdeva added eight kills. Setters
Brigitta Petrenko and
Marija Borcic set the offense with 21 and 12 assists, respectively. Coastal's defense recorded 15 blocks with Sinnige leading the way with seven blockswhile libero
Lina Perugini led Coastal with 22 digs.
Troy (4-4, 4-4 SBC) was led offensively by Halston Hillier and Buenveur with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Amara Anderson set the offense with 26 assists and Julia Brooks led in defending the net with four blocks.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, with a 6 p.m. ET match at Appalachian State. The Chants and Mountaineers will play a second match on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. ET.
