Chants Make it 14 in a Row with Friday Night Win

CCU is off to the best start in program history

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team improved to 14-0 with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, and 25-23) win over the Georgia Southern Eagles on Friday night to record the three-match conference series sweep inside the HTC Center.

With the three 3-0 straight-set wins this week over the Eagles, the Chants have now won 16-straight sets and last dropped a set to Troy on Oct. 23.

The Chanticleers were again solid in the attack, posting a .314 hitting percentage, while also adding four service aces in the win.

Junior Anett Nemeth led the way with 16 kills, along with eight digs, one block, and one service ace, while freshman Lauren Malone tallied a career-high nine kills to go along with seven digs.

Setter Brigitta Petrenko passed out a match-high 32 assists to go along with her 10 digs and match-high three service aces, while libero Lina Perugini registered 23 digs on the backline for the Chants in the win.

The Eagles were led by Chamblee Russell's 10 kills, while both Mya Wilson and Maddie Bryant finished the match with eight spikes apiece. Setter Madison Brown tallied 28 set assists, while defensive specialist Landon Jones had a team-high 10 digs.

Feeding off of hot starts all week long, the Chants took a 2-0 lead to open the match on kills from Petrenko and Nemeth and didn't look back, rolling out to a 13-7 lead on a GS attack error.

After a Georgia Southern timeout, the Chants added to their lead with three-straight service aces by Petrenko and a kill by Ani Bozdeva to roll out to an 11-point lead at 18-7.

Coastal extended its lead to as high as 12 multiple times down the stretch of the opening set before freshman Nyla Shepherd posted a kill and then a block to give the home team the 25-15 first set win.

GS took the early 1-0 lead to start the second set only to see CCU run off three consecutive points and score on seven of the next eight rallies to pull out to a 7-2 lead on four-straight kills from the right arm of Malone.

Following an Eagle timeout and kill by Bryant, Coastal freshman Madison Lowery posted back-to-back kills to put the Chants on top 9-3 early in the game.

The Eagles clawed their way back into the match, cutting the Chants' lead to one at 11-10 before three-straight errors and a kill by Nemeth pushed Coastal back out in front by five at 15-10.

The Chants never looked back, as they sandwiched a GS kill with spikes of their own from Shepherd and Bozdeva to pick up the second set win at 25-19.

The third set saw the Chants playing from behind at the start, as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead at the start and made it 4-2 on a Wilson kill.

However, a block by the duo of Christina Nance and Nemeth followed by a kill from Malone and another GS attack error saw the home team take the lead at 5-4.

Neither team could pull away from the other, as the set saw ties at 9-9, 11-11, and 12-12 before an 8-2 Coastal run highlighted by four kills from Nemeth put the Chants in front by six at 20-14.

Refusing to go down without a fight, the Eagles battled back to tie the set up at 21-21 on back-to-back kills from Russell, only to see back-to-back kills from Nemeth and Bozdeva put the Chants back in front at 23-21.

The two teams then traded kills with Nemeth's final spike giving the Chants' the 25-23 third set victory and 3-0 match win.

The Chanticleers (14-0, 14-0 SBC) will wrap up the 2020 fall regular season at home versus Appalachian State on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12-13, at the HTC Center.
