LEXINGTON, VA. - On Saturday, Coastal Carolina sprinter Melissa Jefferson highlighted the final day of the VMI Indoor Classic for CCU with her second career event victory.
Jefferson earned the victory in the 200 meters with a time of 24.94, just seven-hundredths shy of her personal best time. Teammates Hesmari Coetzee and Tariney Pepper also earned top 10 finishes in the race as Coetzee added a fifth-place finish with a time 25.19, and the freshman Pepper finished seventh marking a time of 25.45.
In 3000 meters, freshman Ashley Rulison finished fifth out of 28 runners with a personal best time of 10:36.90. Katie Bearup of Washington and Lee earned the win with a time of 10:28.75.
Ty-Layshia West added the Chant's fourth top 10 finish on the day as the freshman finished at 15.11 meters. Grace Gaudin of George Mason was first out of 50 jumpers with a time of 18.87 meters.
Freshman Jaquoia Williams earned a 10th-place result in the long jump as she reached a distance of 5.38 meters. Maikala Mcintrye of Western Carolina led the 55-jumper field as she reached 5.86 meters.
In the 500 meters, Mya Ray finished just outside the top 10 with a time of 1:20.97. Hannah Seagrave earned the win as she crossed the finish line at 1:13.66.
Erica Evans, Alyssa LeClaire, Coetzee, and Pepper placed fifth in the 4x400-relay race out of 24 teams for a time of 3:55.01, behind the first-place school William and Mary who finished at 3:46.45.
Sophomore Rebecca Lehman earned a top 20 finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.62. Tatiana Ogundeko of Charleston Southern picked up the victory with a time of 2:12.59.
The Chanticleers return to the track in two weeks at the Sun Belt Championships in Birmingham, Ala., Feb. 24-25.
