Chanticleers Hit Their Way to a 3-0 Win Over Georgia State

The loss snapped CCU’s losing streak at three

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team hit .323 overall as a team and had two players post double-digit kills to lead the Chanticleers to a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon in the HTC Center.

The win snapped a three-game skid for the Chants and pushed their winning streak over the Georgia State Panthers to 15-straight wins.

With the win, the Chants improved to 16-8 overall and 10-4 in Sun Belt play, while the loss dropped the Panthers to 7-17 overall and 4-10 in conference action.

Coastal's offensive attack was led by graduate transfer Doris Carter and her match-high 14 kills, while super senior Ani Bozdeva nearly had a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs.

Middle hitter Madison Lowery hit .636 on the match with eight kills over 11 attacks, while Bozdeva hit .500 in the win.

The duo of Brigitta Petrenko and Marija Borcic combined to pass out 39 assists, 22 and 17, respectively, while Petrenko tied Bozdeva with a team-high nine digs.

At the net, veterans Cheyenne Jones and Christina Nance both finished with two solo blocks and three block assists each, while Carter and Bozdeva each had one solo block in the win.

Georgia State had 11 different players register a kill over the three-set match, while 10 different Panthers had at least one dig overall. No Panther had more than seven kills or seven digs in the three-set loss.

The Chanticleers, who trailed just once in each of the second and third sets, came out of the opening serve on fire, scoring five of the first six points of the match to take a 4-1 lead on a Georgia State attack error.

Led by a combined 11 kills from Carter and Bozdeva in the opening set, the Chants led by as much as seven on multiple occasions, at 12-5 on another Panther attack error, 16-9 on a Bozdeva kill, and 17-10 on a Carter spike.

After a Lowery putaway and a Georgia State timeout saw the Chants on top 18-10, the Panthers posted back-to-back points to cut the lead to six at 18-12 only to see the Chants answer with a 6-0 run highlighted by three Carter kills and a Borcic service ace to take a 24-12 lead.

CCU's Jasmine Rivest put the first set away with a kill five rallies later to give the home team the 25-16 first-set win.

The Chants, which hit .412 as a team in the first-set win, again used an efficient attack in the second set, hitting .367 overall with only four attack errors in the win.

Coastal gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead with an attack error to open the set but battled back to score five of the next seven points to take a 5-3 lead on another Lowery kill.

Georgia State tied the match up at 5-5 and then traded points with the Chants until a kill from Bozdeva, a solo block from Nance, and a GSU attack error pushed the Chants in front by four at 11-7 and forced a Panthers' timeout.

Following a CCU service error out of the timeout, Coastal picked up kills from Bozdeva, Jones, and Carter, and a service ace from Bozdeva to use a 4-0 spurt to take a 15-8 lead over the Panthers and forced another timeout.

Coastal was able to hold off the Panthers for the remainder of the set, leading by no less than four points before closing the set out with a 5-4 advantage to earn the 25-18 second-set victory.

The third set started the same way as the second, as Coastal spotted the Panthers a 1-0 lead and then took a 5-2 win on a block by Nance and Jones.

After the Panthers tied the set up at 5-5 on a block by Meishea Griffin and Clara Bednarek, Coastal retook the lead on kills from Carter, Lowery, and Carter again to pull out in front by three at 8-5.

However, this time, the Panthers clawed their way back into the set to tie the frame up at 11-11 on a Leah Wilcox kill, only to see the Chants refuse to relinquish the lead and use a block from Bozdeva and a service ace from Petrenko kept the home team on top at 13-11.

Again, Georgia State battled back to tie the Chants up once more at 16-16 and again at 17-17, yet the Chanticleers had an answer each time, using a set error, a combined block from Lowery and Rivest, and a Carter spike to take a 20-17 lead and force a Georgia State timeout.

Down the stretch, kills from Carter, Bozdeva, and Rivest kept the Chants in front until a service ace from Petrenko on match point gave the home team a 25-21 third-set win and a 3-0 sweep.

With the sweep, the Chants improved to 8-4 on the season in three-set matches.

Coastal Carolina will hit the road for a conference matchup at Appalachian State on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. ET.
