TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Coastal Carolina freshman
Nicole Abelar carded a second-round 70, 2-under par, on Saturday to pace the Chanticleers on day two of the Florida State Match-up in Tallahassee, Fla. It is a CCU career-low round for the freshman golfer.
The first-year Chant shot a 33, 3-under par, on the back nine to start the day, carding an eagle on the par-5 hole No. 11 and then turned in two birdies on holes 17 and 18. She finished the day with a 37, +1, on the front nine, which included two birdies and three bogeys to end the day with a CCU-low round 70. With her 70 on Saturday and 71 on Friday, Abelar will enter the final round of play on Sunday in second-place overall with a 36-hole score of 141, 3-under par.
However, the team overall struggled to get any consistency going and carded a second-round team score of 309, +21, on the day, to fall to fifth-place overall on the team leaderboard.
Coastal's
Sophia Carlsen finished the second round with a 79, +7, (39-40) carding three birdies and seven pars over her 18 holes of play. Coupled with her first-round 72, even par, on day one, Carlsen is in a tie at 28th overall with her 36-hole score of 151, +7.
Caitlin Evans-Brand and
Heidrun Hlynsdottir both shot rounds of 80, +8, on Saturday.
Evans-Brand carded a 42 on the back nine but bounced back to shoot 1-under over the first four holes on the front nine before finishing with three bogeys down the stretch. Combined with her first-round 74, +2, Evans-Brand enters the final day of play on Sunday tied for 41st overall at 154, +10.
Hynsdottir started her day with three birdies over her first five holes on the back nine today and shot a 40 on both the front and back nines to finish with her round of 80. She will head into the final day of play on Sunday tied for 50th overall at 156, +12.
Coastal's
Tiffany Arafi rounded out the CCU lineup with a round of 81, +9, (38-43), in which she finished her round with three-straight pars on the front nine. She will enter the third and final round of play with a 36-hole score of 157, +13, and in 55th place.
Host and No. 11 nationally-ranked Florida State leads the field with a 36-hole team score of 564, 12-under par, sitting in front of No. 14 Kent State (584, +8), Clemson (595, +19), and Michigan (601, +25).
The Chanticleers will tee-off the third and final round on Sunday starting at 8:50 a.m. ET. CCU will play with Ohio State and Michigan.
