CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team defeated the College of Charleston Cougars 6-1 at the Stevens Tennis Complex in Conway on Saturday afternoon for its third consecutive win on the year. The win improved the Chants' record on the season to 4-2 while the Cougars fall to 4-4 on the year.
"The guys really came out with the intensity in doubles and it really paid off. I'm proud of the guys who came off the bench today and performed well too," stated head coach
Chris Powers. "We had such a slow start to our season due to poor weather and COVID-19 protocols, and it finally feels like the program has found a good stride. We need to keep this level of effort and continue to build on it."
Coastal opened the match taking a 1-0 lead after the teams on court No. 2 and No. 3 clinched the doubles point leaving court No. 1 unfinished. The tandem of
Bastien Huon and
Daiki Tanabe defeated the CofC duo of Karl Mosterd and Andre Limon 6-0 while
Guilherme Toresan and
Neil O'Connor clinched the first point of the match with a 6-2 win over Robby Krick and Johnny Wang.
On court No. 1,
Pyry Hyrkkonen and
Diego Giraldo were leading 3-2 over Noah Borges and Guido Argentini.
In singles action, the Chants won five of the six matches for the outcome of 6-1. Tanabe put CCU up 2-0 with the 7-5, 6-2 win over Krick on court No. 4 while on court No. 1 Huon earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Argentini to give Coastal a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Chanticleers'
Gonzalo Achondo clinched the match with the fourth point by defeating Borges 6-4, 7-5 on court No. 2.
Limon, of College of Charleston, put the Cougars on the scoreboard earning the 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 three-set win over O'Connor at court No. 5.
CCU's Giraldo needed three sets, on court No. 3, to give Coastal a 5-1 advantage after dropping the first set 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Juan Castellanos tallied the final point for the Chanticleers with the 7-6, 6-2 over Wang on court No. 6.
Coastal Carolina will return to action for a neutral site matchup against Sun Belt foe Georgia State on Tuesday, March 23 in Aiken, S.C. The first serve is scheduled for noon ET.
