CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will wrap up its 2021 regular-season road slate this weekend with a three-game series at Sun Belt East Division-leading South Alabama on May 14-16 in Mobile, Ala.
All three games will be video streamed live on ESPN+ and will be broadcasted live on WRNN Hot Talk 99.5 FM.
SCHEDULE
• Game 1 – Friday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET
• Game 2 – Saturday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET
• Game 3 – Sunday, May 16 at 2 p.m. ET
CHARTING THE CHANTS
• Coastal Carolina enters the weekend at 21-21 overall and 5-10 in conference play.
• The Chants are just 3-7 over their last 10 games and are on a three-game losing streak heading into the three-game series at South Alabama.
• CCU is 10-10 overall on the road this season and is 5-5 over its last 10 road contests.
• As a team this season, the Chants are hitting .247 with 50 home runs, 68 doubles, 12 triples, 225 RBIs, and 246 runs scored.
• The pitching staff has posted a 4.89 ERA, which ranks eighth in the Sun Belt Conference, and is holding opponents to a .263 batting average on the season.
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
• The South Alabama Jaguars are 26-17 overall and 12-6 in the Sun Belt this season.
• USA sits atop of the Sun Belt Conference regular-season standings entering the weekend after coming off a 2-1 series loss at Texas State last weekend.
• The Jaguars are 15-6 overall and 9-0 in conference play at home this season, including having won each of their last 12 home games.
• At home this season, the Jaguars have recorded three-game conference weekend series sweeps over Troy, Louisiana, and Georgia State.
• South Alabama as a team enters the weekend hitting .232 with 35 home runs, four triples, 53 doubles, 201 RBIs, and 220 runs scored.
• On the mound, the Jaguars' pitching staff is second in the Sun Belt with a 3.92 ERA, which also ranks 42nd nationally, and in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 2.78 with 414 strikeouts and 149 walks over 381.0 innings pitched.
• The Jaguars can also flash the leather, as USA leads the Sun Belt and ranks 31st nationally with a .977 fielding percentage on the year.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• Coastal Carolina leas the all-time series over South Alabama at 10-6 overall.
• CCU is 6-3 versus the Jaguars in Sun Belt Conference play and is 8-3 versus USA since becoming a member of the Sun Belt in 2017.
• The Chants are 4-4 overall at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. but is 4-2 overall in Sun Belt play at USA, having won two-of-three games over the Jaguars in both 2017 and 2019.
• Coastal won the last meeting between the two teams in 2019 and has posted the longest winning streak overall in the series at five games from April 7, 2018, to April 6, 2019.
HITTING VS. PITCHING
• CCU ranks in the top-five in the Sun Belt in home runs (50, 1st), walks (198, 2nd), hit-by-pitch (60, 2nd), scoring (5.9, 3rd), sacrifice bunts (35, 3rd), triples (12, 3rd), runs (246, 4th), slugging percentage (.419, 5th), and on-base percentage (.360, 5th).
• USA ranks in the top-five in the Sun Belt in shutouts (5, 1st), WHIP 1.26, 1st), ERA (3.92, 2nd), hits allowed per nine innings (7.80, 2nd), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.78, 2nd), strikeouts per nine innings (9.8, 3rd), and walks allowed per nine innings (3.52, 3rd).
UNCHARTERED WATERS
• For the first time since Coastal Carolina joined the Sun Belt Conference prior to the 2017 season, the Chanticleers were swept in a three-game conference series last weekend at home by the Troy Trojans (May 7-9).
• CCU was last swept in a three-game series in conference play back in 2014, as the Chants dropped all three games of a Big South Conference series at No. 22 Liberty from May 5-11.
• In fact, the last time that the Chanticleers were swept in all three games of a three-game series was back on April 29-May 1, 2016, when the Chants dropped three games at No. 25 Georgia Tech.
SUN BELT SLUMP
• For the first time since joining the Sun Belt for the 2017 season, the Chanticleers dropped their first three three-game conference weekend series with series losses at Louisiana (March 26-28), at UTA (April 10-12), and at home versus Georgia Southern (April 16-18).
• The Chanticleers snapped the series losing streak with a 2-1 series win on the road in conference play at Georgia State (April 30-May 2).
• However, with a series loss at home to Troy last weekend (May 7-9), the Chants are just 1-4 in conference weekend series this year.
• Entering this season, Coastal had won 21 of its 30 Sun Belt Conference series since joining the league, including winning nine of its 10 conference series in 2018.
• Prior to this season, the Chants had lost just seven series in conference play since joining the Sun Belt entering the 2021 season and had lost back-to-back conference series just once (2019).
VERSUS THE SUN BELT EAST DIVISION
• The Chanticleers enter the weekend sixth in the Sun Belt East Division regular-season standings at 5-10 overall.
• This year, Coastal is just 3-6 versus inter-division foes having gone 2-1 at Georgia State (April 30-May 2), 1-2 versus Georgia Southern (April 16-18), and 0-3 against Troy (May 7-9) last time out.
• CCU's three-game series with Appalachian State scheduled for April 1-3 was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Chanticleers' baseball program.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
• The Chanticleers will kick off another road trip this week which was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday, May 12, at the College of Charleston before that game was washed out.
• Going into this week, the Chants have played just seven games at home since March 23.
• In fact, 19 of Coastal Carolina's last 27 games have come on the road, which included an eight-game road trip from March 26 to April 13 with five home games during that stretch being canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
