GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team got the 2021-22 season underway with a four-over 292 during Friday's first round of the Furman University Lady Paladin Invitational. The Chants stand second after the first day of competition.
CCU was led by two tested veterans and a freshman newcomer in senior
Tiffany Arafi, junior
Sophia Carlsen, and freshman
Sara Sarrion. Arafi led the way with an even-par 72, shooting a 36 on each nine. She finished the day with three birdies, one bogey, and one double-bogey and is tied for ninth.
Carlson and Sarrion each finished the day with a one-over 73. Carlsen's score came on a 35 on the front nine followed by a 38 on the back. Sarrion, playing in her first collegiate tournament as a Chanticleer, shot a 34 on the front and 39 on the back to finish her day. Both players are tied for 11th heading into tomorrow's second round.
Jenjira Jinangkul missed all of last season but made a splash in her return to the course with a two-over 74. Her consistency on the day saw the junior shoot a 37 on both the front and back nine as she finished the day tied for 17th.
Caitlin Evans-Brand had an up-and-down day for CCU finishing with a five-over 77. Her first nine holes saw her finish with a three-over, which included two birdies and five bogeys. On the back nine she had eight pars to go with one double-bogey. She had a steady 10 pars over her final 11 holes and will enter the second round tied for 38th.
Freshman
Isabella Spinazze also made her debut with the Chanticleers. She finished the day with an eight-over 80 and is in a tie for 67th place, playing as an individual.
"A great start to the fall," head coach
Katie Quinney said. "There are many positives to build on and look forward to competing the rest of the weekend."
Host Furman leads the event after shooting an eight-under 280. Rounding out the top-five after CCU at 7-over, 295, are James Madison, Augusta, and Sun Belt Conference rival Georgia Southern.
Stetson and North Florida follow after finishing the first round with an eight-over, 296, while Western Kentucky (+10, 298), UNC Wilmington (+13, 301), and Memphis (+14, 302) finalize the top-10. Wofford (+21, 309), Daytona State College (+25, 313), and Florida Gulf Coast (+27, 315) round out the field.
