Chanticleers Improve to 3-2 on Season with a 3-1 Win Over UTSA

Carter sets season-high 14 kills in the win over Roadrunners

OXFORD, Miss. – The Chanticleer women's volleyball team finished their weekend on Saturday by defeating the UTSA Roadrunners 3-1 on the final day of the Ole Miss Invitational at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

The Chanticleers finished the weekend with a 2-1 record and improved to 3-2 overall on the season. The Chants dispatched the Roadrunners 25-20, 18-25, 25-15, and 25-22 behind graduate student Doris Carter's season-high 14 kills.

Ani Bozdeva tallied her second career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

The Chanticleers faced a 6-2 deficit in the first set before turning the match around in their favor. CCU went on a 13-5 rally, including a stretch that saw CCU score six points with two of Carter's opening set six kills. UTSA couldn't survive the Chants' mid-set run hitting .147 to CCU's .323.

UTSA tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 second-set win as Kelsey Carpenter lead the Roadrunners in the second set with five kills on seven attempts. Cheyenne Jones led CCU in set two with three kills on five attempts.

CCU jumped out to a 13-6 advantage in set three, its largest lead of the frame. The run was accentuated by Brigitta Petrenko's two service aces and a pair of Bozdeva kills. CCU forced six UTSA errors to close out the set on a 10-4 run for the 25-15 set win.

Offensively, Carter led the Chants in the fourth-set win with five kills on 11 attempts. Defensively, Coastal Carolina held the Roadrunners to a .087 hitting percentage, while Madison Lowery and Jones had three block assists of the five total team blocks in the final set.

Coastal setters Marija Borcic and Petrenko had 19 assists apiece in the victory.

Coastal's libero Lina Perugini collected a match-high 23 digs on the day, her third 20-dig output of the season.

The graduate transfer Jones also chipped in offensively for her team with her second double-digit kill performance of the season as she had 11.

UTSA's Hannah Lopez had a match-high 17 kills while teammate Courtney Walters dished out 19 assists.

Coastal Carolina will return to the court on Sept. 5-7 as the Chanticleers will host the Chanticleer Classic. The Chanticleers will play host to East Carolina, UNCW, and Radford at the HTC Center.
