Chants Suffer First Loss of the 2021 Season Sunday

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fought for a full 90 minutes but was unable to hold off UNC Wilmington as the visiting Seahawks handed the Chanticleers their first loss of the season, a 2-0 defeat, Sunday night.

With the loss, Coastal falls to 2-1-1 overall on the season and UNC Wilmington improves to 3-1-0 overall.

"Tough results against a good UNCW team," head coach Paul Hogan said. "I felt like we just didn't have the legs to compete tonight. We played 110 minutes on [the road] Friday and they didn't. I'm proud of our girls and their fight, now we shift our focus to Wake Forest."

The Seahawks kept goalkeeper Ky Hudson on her toes Sunday, as the junior faced 13 shots (nine on goal) in the first half alone and tallied 10 saves on the night.

UNC Wilmington looked to strike early, as Audrey Harding's shot was saved by Hudson just five minutes into the match. Nearly five minutes later, the Seahawks' Madison Henry's shot was saved and Jordan Faveri was there to convert and put the visitors up 1-0. CCU looked to answer as Lauren Denning fired off two back-to-back shots but was unable to find the back of the net.

Nearly five minutes following the halftime period, the Seahawks tallied their second goal of the night as Morgan Nanni connected on a pass from Faveri in the 54th minute. Following UNC Wilmington's goal, the Chants tallied three shots but each was saved by the Seahawks' keeper.

UNCW ended the night with a 21-9 shooting advantage and a 12-3 advantage in shots on frame. Denning, Carleigh Frilles, and Jordyn Smith each recorded a team-leading two shots. The Chants found the advantage in saves at 10-3. The visitors did however find the edge in corner kicks, recording eight to CCU's three.

Coastal Carolina hits the road to begin three consecutive road matches, as the Chants face Wake Forest on Thursday, Sept. 9. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET from Spry Stadium.
