Chants Fall to ODU on Homecoming Weekend

Coastal will have an open week next week before returning to action on Oct. 29

CONWAY, S.C. – For the first time in 11 months, the Chanticleers suffered a loss, as the Old Dominion Monarchs (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) defeated Coastal Carolina (6-1, 3-1 Sun Belt) 49-21 on Homecoming Weekend inside Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.

The loss snapped the Chants' winning streak at nine-straight games, which dated back to a 42-40 loss to Georgia State last year on Nov. 13, 2021, ironically also on Homecoming Weekend at Coastal Carolina University.

The visiting Monarchs controlled the game from the start, as the Old Dominion offense put up 528 yards of total offense, 323 of which game on the ground in the rushing attack. They averaged 10.8 yards per play and scored the most points they had all season with 49 in the win.

The Coastal offense totaled 456 yards overall for the game, but unlike the Monarchs, the Chanticleers threw for 366 yards and rushed for just 90 on the day.

Coastal's offense was led by redshirt junior quarterback Grayson McCall, as he was 26-for-34 for 358 yards, the second-most passing yards in a single game in his career, and three touchdowns. His three touchdown tosses increased his career total to 72, which placed him in a tie with Sasser Hall of Famer Alex Ross for the most career touchdown passes in program history.

McCall again spread the ball around, as eight different Chants had at least one reception for the contest, led by Sam Pinckney with a team-high seven catches for 113 yards and Jared Brown with five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. Both Jacob Jenkins (3 rec., 24 yards, TD) and Tyler Roberts (1 rec., 9 yards, TD) each had a touchdown catch.

The Chants were bottled up in the rushing attack, as senior Reese White led the way with 10 carries and 46 yards, while redshirt freshman Max Balthazar added seven carries for 32 yards late in the contest. Redshirt sophomore CJ Beasley was held to just 15 yards on 11 carries for the game.

For ODU, the offense was led by running back Blake Watson with a school-record 259 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 19 rushing attempts. Fellow running back Obie Sanni carried the ball four times for 27 yards, while backup quarterback D.J. Mack Jr. had three carries for 26 yards and a touchdown.

The Monarchs' quarterback Hayden Wolff was 12-for-16 for 184 yards and two touchdowns, while Mack Jr. completed his lone pass attempt for a 21-yard touchdown.

Just like on the offensive side of the ball, the ODU defense was in control for most of the contest, as the Monarchs had 7.0 sacks, 12.0 tackles-for-loss, and forced a fumble. Coastal had allowed just 7.0 total sacks over its first six games of the season.

Defensive back Tre Hawkins led the Monarchs' defensive effort with 10 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup, while the nation's leading-tackler in Jason Henderson had 10 stops and 0.5 tackles-for-loss. Both Shawn Asbury and Terry Jones added seven tackles each.

Coastal's defense was led by nine stops from linebacker JT Killen and six tackles from safety Joshua Madison, but was unable to force at least one turnover for the first time this season.

The Monarchs struck first on their opening drive of the contest, as the duo of Wolff and Watson led an eight-play, 73-yard drive, that was capped off by a 25-yard touchdown run by Watson to give ODU a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the first quarter.

Coastal looked to get points on the scoreboard on its first offensive possession, yet saw a 46-yard field goal attempt fall short of the uprights to give the ball back to the Old Dominion offense at the ODU 29-yard line with 4:43 left in the opening quarter of play.

The "Black Swarm" defense forced the Monarchs to punt on each of their next two offensive possessions, before the offense tied the score up at 7-7 on a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive highlighted by an eight-yard touchdown pass from McCall to Jenkins with 2:52 to go before the halftime break.

However, that was more than enough time for the Monarchs, as Watson broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run to end a three-play, 75-yard scoring drive and put ODU on top 14-7 at the halftime break.

The second-quarter score for the Monarchs was the first of six-straight touchdowns, as the visitors found pay dirt on all five of their offensive possessions in the second half to runaway for the Sun Belt Conference win.

Coastal opened the second half with the ball and drove down to the ODU 40-yard line before Hawkins stripped a CCU wide receiver to force a fumble and give it back to the Monarchs' offense with 11:30 to go in the third quarter.

The rest of the quarter belonged to the visitors from Virginia, as ODU scored on a 20-yard rush by Mack Jr., before forcing the Chanticleers to turn the ball over on downs with a sack on fourth-and-three from midfield.

After ODU pushed its lead to 21 points at 28-7 on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Wolff to Isiah Page on the ensuing possession, the Chanticleers answered back quickly, as McCall found a streaking Jared Brown down the middle of the field for a 75-yard catch and score to close the gap to 28-14 with 5:07 left in the third quarter.

However, the Monarchs' torrid scoring pace continued with another big play, this time a 21-yard pass from Mack Jr. to Isaiah Spencer, to again retake the by three scores at 35-14 with just over a minute left before the fourth quarter.

Refusing to quit, CCU's offense drove down the field to answer with another score of its own, as McCall connected on a 20-yard pass with Kyre Duplessis on a third-and-12 to end the quarter and keep the Chants' drive alive with 15 minutes to play.

McCall continued the drive with completions to Beasley (10 yards) and Pinckney (32 yards), and rushed one time for four yards before finding Roberts in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown pass to put the score at 35-21 early in the fourth frame.

ODU put the game away on its next offensive series, as Watson rushed for eight yards on a first-and-10 and then again found free space on the next play, rushing to the end zone from 67 yards out to add to the Monarchs' lead at 42-21.

Following a CCU punt, its lone punt of the game, the Monarchs' scored again on a two-yard pass from Wolff to Ali Jennings on a fourth-and-goal with 5:33 left in regulation to finish off the 49-21 road win over the Chanticleers.

The Chanticleers (6-1, 3-1 Sun Belt) will have an open week next week before trekking north to take on Marshall (3-3, 0-2 Sun Belt) on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Huntington, W.Va.
