Coastal Carolina Battles Louisiana to 2-2 Draw on Sunday Afternoon

Chants now get set to face Southern Miss

LAFAYETTE, LA. – In a match that saw four goals and 20 fouls, the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team battled the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.

With the draw, the Chanticleers picked up a point in conference play. CCU is now 1-7-3 overall and 0-3-1 in conference action while Louisiana is now 1-5-5- overall and 0-2-2 in SBC action.

Coastal Carolina wasted no time, as senior Megan Brouse picked up a ball just past midfield that she was able to get around the Cajun's defender before going one-on-one with the Louisiana goalkeeper and firing her team-leading seventh goal of the season to put the Chanticleers up 1-0, just three minutes into the match.

In traffic, Louisiana's Perri Belzer played a ball off a corner kick that she edged up over the head of Hope Morrow and off the crossbar to level the score at 1-1 in the 26th minute.

With just under 10 minutes to play before the halftime break, Carmen Gutierrez was called for a foul and shown a straight red card resulting in the Chanticleers having to play with 10 on the field for the remainder of the match.

The Chanticleers were awarded a penalty kick following a foul called into the box on the Ragin' Cajuns in the 40th minute. Sarah Allen notched her first goal of the season as the redshirt senior converted the shot to give Coastal a 2-1 advantage.

Louisiana earned a free kick which Karleen Bedre sent into the box that connected with the head of teammate Hailly Waterhouse who headed the ball past a diving Morrow to even the score at 2-2 in the 56th minute. The Ragin' Cajuns looked to find the difference maker in the 69th minute, but the shot went off the crossbar and into the hands of Morrow.

CCU's Gianna Irungaray sent what proved to be the final chance for either team into the box with less than one minute remaining in the contest as the sophomore fired a shot towards the bottom right corner of the net but her attempt was saved and pushed out of bounds the Louisiana goalkeeper.

Louisiana found the edge in total shots, 14-11, while Coastal Carolina tallied an 8-2 shot-on-goal advantage. In goal, the Ragin' Cajuns were credited with six saves to the Chants zero.

The Chanticleers return home and host Sun Belt Conference newcomer Southern Miss on Thursday, Oct. 6, at the CCU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET from Conway, S.C.
