CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team swept Marshall 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon in Conway, S.C. With the win, the Chanticleers improve to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Thundering Herd dropped to 7-17 on the year and 1-11 in the conference.
CCU's offense was led by
Ella Saada with a match-high 14 kills.
Brigitta Petrenko and
Paulina Perez Rosas finished with seven and six put-downs, respectively, while setter Petrenko tallied 34 of the Chants' 41 assists.
Defensively as a team, Coastal totaled six blocks with middle blocker
Christina Nance finishing with three stops, while defensive specialist
Lina Perugini led the team with 10 digs.
In the opening set, the Chanticleers jumped out to an early 5-3 advantage, highlighted by a pair of early kills by Nance. After the two teams traded the next five points with CCU leading 7-6. Marshall fought back to even the set at 9-9. Sparked by a Saada spike, the Chants took control of the opening set with a 10-2 run for a 19-11 advantage, which was capped by an
Agata Lesiak service ace.
With the Chanticleers holding an eight-point lead, the Thundering Herd and Coastal traded the next 12 points with CCU holding on for the 25-17 opening-set win.
With a 1-0 match lead, Coastal Carolina raced out to the 15-4 advantage to start the second set, highlighted by three put-downs by Saada. However, the visitors from Huntington, W.Va., battled back to cut the Chants' lead to three at 19-16 by outscoring the host squad 12-4. Despite the Herd fighting back, CCU pushed ahead at 23-16 with a 4-0 burst before both teams traded the final four points, with Coastal picking up the 25-18 win in the second set.
In the third and final set, Marshall claimed its only lead of the match at 2-1 only to see the Chanticleers rebound for the 4-2 advantage on a pair of Chanticleer kills. After the Herd evened the match at 5-5, CCU flexed its muscles and pushed out front at 9-7 by scoring four points to Marshall's two.
Coastal opened its lead to 13-7, highlighted by a pair of spikes by Nance, just to see both teams trade the next 12 points for the Chanticleer 19-13 lead. The Chants closed out the set with six unanswered points for the third-set 25-13 win to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Coastal Carolina will return to the road for the final time in the regular season, as the Chanticleers will visit South Alabama in Mobile, Ala., on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. ET and Saturday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. ET.
