SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team fell 84-69 to the Wofford Terriers to wrap up the season-opening road swing in Spartanburg, S.C., on Wednesday, Nov. 16. With the loss, the Chanticleers fell to 0-3 on the year, while the Terriers improved to 1-2 with the win.
For the game, CCU was 25-of-60 (41.7 percent) from the field overall and 9-of-25 (36.0 percent) from three-point range. The Chants were led by graduate student
Aja Blount with 21 points, while newcomer
Anaya Barney and returners
Angie Juste-Jean, and
Arin Freeman chipped in with 15, 14, and 12 points, respectively. Freeman led the rebounding effort by grabbing eight boards, while Blount and Barney snagged seven and six rebounds, respectively.
Wofford was led by Rachael Rose with 23 points, with Jackie Carman adding 22. The Terriers shot 43.9 percent on 29-of-66 from the field including going 11-of-30 from long range for a 36.7 shooting percentage. Lilly Hatton led the team with 10 rebounds, while Annabelle Schultz and Rose grabbed seven boards each.
Coastal and the Terriers matched basket-for-basket in the opening four minutes of action with the score even at 8-8, sparked by a three-point shot by Juste-Jean and topped off with a Blount long range three-pointer. After the two teams traded baskets, the Chants scored eight unanswered for a 22-12 lead, highlighted by a Barney steal and fast-break layup to force Wofford to call a timeout.
Coming out of the break, the Terriers' Carman put back a missed three-pointer by Hatton. Coastal hit back-to-back three-point shots as
Brali Simmons and Blount were left wide-open for the 28-14 advantage. After a Wofford three-pointer, Coastal closed the opening quarter with the 30-17 lead as Juste-Jean hit a jumper in the paint.
Coastal would open its largest lead at 33-17 early in the second quarter as Barney started the second-period scoring with a three-pointer from the corner. With 8:10 left to play in the first half, the Terriers outscored the Chanticleers 11-2 to cut the CCU lead to 35-28. Over the final 4:34, the two teams traded baskets once again with the Chants holding a 45-39 halftime advantage.
The two teams swapped three-point shots to open the scoring in the third quarter before Wofford scored five unanswered to cut the CCU lead to one point at 48-47. After trading baskets, the Terriers took the lead off a mid-range jump shot by Hatton, which was followed by Rose going 1-of-2 at the free throw line to put the home team on top for a 52-50 advantage.
However, Coastal quickly answered as Blount put a layup in to even the score at 52-52. CCU's Barney would give the Chants their final lead at 56-53 on a three-point jump shot from the wing with 2:13 remaining in the third period. Despite trailing by one point, Wofford closed the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 61-56 lead into the final period.
The Terriers opened the fourth quarter with an 11-3 surge to take a 72-59 advantage. A short-lived comeback attempt by Coastal was sparked by a pair of free throws by Blount and capped off by a fast-break layup by Juste-Jean as CCU trailed 75-66.
That would be as close as Coastal would get, as the Chants were outscored 9-3 as Blount tallied the final three Chanticleer points on an old-fashioned three-point play by hitting a jump shot in the paint and getting fouled for the final margin of 84-69.
Coastal Carolina will return to action for its home opener, on Wednesday, Nov. 23, as the Chanticleers will host Coker in Conway, S.C. The tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
