AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team shot a 27-over 315 in the first round of the Valspar Augusta Invitational on Saturday in Augusta, Ga. at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
CCU finished the opening round in 11th place as weather and high winds played havoc on the field on Saturday. Valspar officials decided to stop play after 18 holes and the teams will finish the event Sunday with the final 18 holes.
The scores indicated the toughness the wind and rain played on the course, as all of the 15 teams finished double-digits over par and only one player in the field broke par with a one-under score.
Caitlin Evans-Brand played through the conditions to card a three-over 75 (35-40) to lead the Chants. Her one-under 35 on the front nine was the only sub-par nine-hole score for CCU. She will enter the final round tied for ninth.
Sophia Carlsen was only three shots back of Evans-Brand after finishing the round with a six-over 78 (41-37). She is tied for 27th heading into the final round of play.
Jenjira Jinangkul and
Tiffany Arafi's scores were not what they are accustomed to scoring, as Jinangkul shot an eight-over 80 (41-39) and is tied for 49th, while Arafi finished with a 10-over 82 (41-41) and is tied for 65th.
Sara Sarrion finished her round with a 21-over 93 (47-46) and is 89th overall.
The weather conditions have jumbled the leaderboard as South Carolina, the nation's fourth-ranked team, leads the event after carding a 13-over 301. Miami and Ole Miss are tied for second at 15-over 303, while Florida State and host Augusta are tied for fourth at +19 307.
Only six strokes separate the next five teams with Alabama standing sixth with a 20-over 308. Furman is one stroke back of the Crimson Tide with a 21-over 309. Virginia Tech (+24, 312), Purdue (+25, 313), and San Diego State (+26, 314) round out the top-10.
CCU is only one stroke behind San Diego State with Memphis (+30, 318), Minnesota (+35, 323), Tennessee (+37, 325), Georgia Southern (+44, 332), and USF (+50, 338) completing the field.
The final round is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. ET. The links for the live action can be found at
