Coastal Baseball to Return to SBC Play this Weekend Versus Georgia State

Chants will host the Panthers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina baseball team, which has not played a complete game at home in Springs Brooks Stadium since defeating ULM 9-4 on March 19, will host the Georgia State Panthers for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series this weekend, April 8-10.

Coastal's last three scheduled home games have not gone a full nine innings. CCU's contest on March 20 with ULM was a 17-17 draw after eight innings due to travel curfew, while the Chants' contest against UNCW set for Tuesday, April 5, was postponed due to inclement weather. Their last contest, which was Wednesday, April 6, was suspended in the seventh inning with CCU leading 7-2 due to rain and lightning.

ABOUT THE CHANTS
• Coastal Carolina enters play at 16-10-1 overall and riding a three-game winning streak with a Sun Belt Conference series sweep at Arkansas State (April 1-3) last weekend.
• Coastal is 5-3-1 overall in Sun Belt Conference play, which is fourth in the regular-season standings.
• The Chants had an unusual week of play, as the weather wreaked havoc on their midweek schedule forcing a postponement of their Tuesday game (April 5) with UNCW and suspending their Wednesday night game (April 6) with College of Charleston midway through the seventh inning with CCU holding a 7-2 lead.
• The CCU offense is hitting .281 on the season with 29 home runs, five triples, 45 doubles, 171 RBIs, and 194 runs scored this season.
• Over the current three-game winning streak, Coastal is hitting .299 with two home runs, seven doubles, 18 RBIs, and 25 runs scored, but most importantly has walked 19 times compared to 20 strikeouts.
• While the offense has been hot as of late, the pitching turned things around last weekend in Jonesboro, Ark., going 3-0 with one save and posting a 3.67 ERA while holding the Arkansas State Red Wolves to a .212 batting average.
• Over their last three completed games, CCU's pitching staff struck out 36 hitters compared to just nine walks over 27.0 innings pitched.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS
• Georgia State enters the weekend at 19-10 overall and on a six-game winning streak.
• The Panthers are 7-2 in Sun Belt play this season, which includes a pair of three-game conference series sweeps at home in Atlanta over Little Rock (March 18-20) and most recently South Alabama (April 1-3).
• GSU's offense leads the Sun Belt with 42 home runs and in hits with 291 overall. GSU is also second in the conference in hitting (.297), runs scored (194), and RBIs (178), while also leading the league in strikeouts (247).
• The Panthers' pitching staff has posted a 4.89 ERA and is second in all of the Sun Belt with 276 strikeouts on the season.

ALL-TIME SERIES HISTORY WITH GEORGIA STATE
• Coastal and Georgia State will be playing the fifth three-game Sun Belt Conference series between the two teams this weekend with CCU holding a 9-3 edge over the Panthers all time.
• The Chanticleers have not dropped a series to the Panthers since joining the league in 2017, having swept Georgia State in Atlanta in 2017 and then posted two wins in each of the last four conference series meetings in 2018, 2019, and 2021.
• CCU has won each of the last two meetings between the two teams and is 7-3 versus Georgia State over the last 10 matchups, all of which have come in regular-season conference play.

COMMON FOES
• Despite this weekend marking the fourth Sun Belt Conference weekend series of the 2022 season, the Chanticleers and Panthers have played just two common opponents thus far this season in Clemson and ULM.
• CCU defeated Clemson 16-7 on March 22 and went 1-1-1 versus ULM in conference play in Springs Brooks Stadium on March 18-20.
• Georgia State beat Clemson 6-1 on March 15, one week before the Chanticleers took down the Tigers, and went 1-2 overall in a three-game road series at ULM on March 25-27.

WEATHER WREAKING HAVOC
• Weather wreaked havoc on the Chants' schedule this past week, washing one game completely out and suspending another.
• CCU's Tuesday game (April 5) with UNCW was postponed due to thunderstorms in the area, while Wednesday's night game (April 6) with College of Charleston was suspended midway through the seventh inning with CCU holding a 7-2 lead.

BYE, BYE MARCH
• Coastal was happy to see the turn of the calendar to April, as CCU struggled in March.
• The Chants went 6-9-1 in March, hitting just .248 and averaged just 6.3 runs per game, while the pitching staff posted a 6.02 ERA and gave up 105 runs and 151 hits over 136.0 innings pitched.
• CCU started the season going 7-1, hitting .340 with an average of 8.5 runs per contest in February. The pitching staff was also hot in February, posting a 3.47 ERA and giving up just 60 hits and 41 runs over 70.0 innings.

HELLO APRIL
• The Chanticleers are off to a 3-0 start for the month of April, not including their suspended game with the College of Charleston from Wednesday night (April 6).
• Coastal is hitting .299 and is averaging 8.3 runs per contest.
• CCU's pitching staff has gone 3-0 with one save and a 3.67 ERA over the three games in April. The Coastal pitchers have struck out 36 batters compared to just nine walks and have held their opponents to a .212 batting average.

SUCCESSFUL ROAD TRIP
• Coastal recently finished an eight-game road swing, the longest of the season, which included games at Clemson (March 22), Texas State (March 25-27), Wake Forest (March 30), and Arkansas State (April 1-3).
• The Chanticleers went 5-3 overall on the road swing, including wins over nationally-ranked Clemson (March 22) and Texas State (March 26), as well as a three-game sweep at Arkansas State (April 1-3).

WINNING WAYS
• The Chanticleers and the Panthers both enter the weekend on winning streaks, as Coastal has won each of its last three games, while Georgia State has won its last six games.

HOME. SWEET. HOME.
• Coastal enjoyed #ThePalace for the first eight games of the season and for the month of February.
• After playing four games on the road in the first week of March - at UNCW (March 2) and North Carolina (March 4-6) - the Chanticleers returned home for what turned out to be a seven-game homestand versus Wake Forest (March 8), Xavier (March 11-13), and ULM (March 18-20).
• Coastal returned to Springs Brooks Stadium this week with a midweek game versus the College of Charleston (April 6) before hosting Georgia State (April 8-10) in Sun Belt Conference play.
• The Chanticleers are 11-3-1 at home this season.
