Chanticleers Sweep Cougars in Nightcap

Coastal Carolina women’s volleyball to play at home on Sept. 13

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team swept the College of Charleston 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-12) in the nightcap on the second day of the CofC Invitational Saturday evening in Charleston, S.C. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 6-3 on the year, while the Cougars dropped to 3-6 with the loss.

Coastal's offense was led by Paulina Perez Rosas and Agata Lesiak with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, while setter Brigitta Petrenko finished with 33 assists and five kills in the match. Alicia Salgado matched a career-high seven kills to go along with three service aces and a pair of assists for the Chants.

Defensively, the Chanticleers' Rebeka Fucka finished with a team-high seven blocks, while Perez Rosas added four blocks. Defensive specialist Lina Perugini finished with 18 digs, while Petrenko and Salgado were able to dig 14 and 12 shots, respectively.

In the opening set, both teams played even after Coastal took an early 1-0 lead and traded points before the Chants got a 3-0 run on a pair of Lesiak kills that sandwiched a Salgado spike for the two-point lead at 11-9. After the Cougars pulled to within one at 11-10, CCU jumped out to a 17-10 advantage on a 6-0 run. The Chanticleers finished the first set with an 8-6 edge for the 25-16 set win.

Christina Nance and Petrenko gave Coastal Carolina a 3-0 lead in the second set on a pair of Nance spikes after a Petrenko service ace opened the game. College of Charleston answered with a 5-1 run to take a slim one-point lead sparked by a Chanticleer miscue and capped by a Tori Carpenter service ace. The two teams played even with the largest lead being one, until Coastal, on back-to-back kills by Salgado, went ahead 10-8. The Cougars answered with a pair points to even the game at 10-10.

After trading points, the Chants scored three points of a 7-1 run, on a Charleston miscue and kills by Nance and Fucka to force CofC to call its first timeout of the set. CCU's Lesiak, Fucka, and Perez Rosas capped off the run as Lesiak finished a set by Petrenko and then aided Fucka on a block assist, who then had a kill which was followed by Perez Rosas spike to cap the run with Coastal holding a 20-13 advantage. College of Charleston outscored the Chants 7-5, but was unable to catch the visitors who got the 25-20 win for the 2-0 match lead.

Coastal jumped to a 5-3 advantage on kills by Nance, Lesiak, and Perez Rosas along with a block assist by Perez Rosas and Fucka. The Cougars pulled to within one point twice before the Chanticleers began to pull away with a 6-0 run highlighted by three points by Perez Rosas by way of a kill and a pair of service aces. College of Charleston pulled to within three with a 5-1 run to trail 13-10 before the Chanticleers ran away with the set with a 12-2 run to claim the 3-0 match sweep.
