Chanticleers Victorious on the Road at Stetson on Sunday Night

Coastal will open up Sun Belt play on Sept. 16

DELAND, Fla. – Following an hour-and-a-half lightning delay, the Coastal Carolina women's soccer team recorded its first win of the season with a 1-0 non-conference road win at Stetson on Sunday night in DeLand, Fla.

With the win, the Chants will head into Sun Belt Conference play at 1-4-2 overall.

The difference maker came in the 66th minute, as Coastal's Rose Behrmann played a low corner kick towards the box that deflected off a foot of a Stetson defender and into the back of the net for an own goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Morrow earned the win in her first action of the season, totaling six saves in the shutout.

Stetson outshot the Chants 14-5 on the match, including a 6-0 edge in shots on goal. The Chants held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks and 6-0 in saves.

The Chants looked to score first, as CCU's leading goal scorer Megan Brouse fired the first shot of the match in the opening minute of the contest, which was blocked by a Stetson defender.

However, the Hatters proved to be the aggressors, as the home team recorded the next four shots, putting each one on frame to force CCU's Morrow to make back-to-back saves in the fifth and seventh minutes and a third stop in the 13th minute.

The momentum switched to the other side of the field over the next 20 minutes of the first half, as Julia Ziegenfuss saw a shot attempt sail high of the goal in the 15th minute, followed by another high shot over the net by fellow teammate Carmen Gutierrez in the 26th minute to keep the match tied at 0-0.

The last 20 minutes of the opening half would see just two more scoring chances, both of which came from Stetson, yet neither team would break the scoreline heading into the halftime break.

To start the second half, the two teams traded shots over the first five minutes out of the break, with CCU's Brouse and Stetson's Maggie Struble going back-and-forth but to no avail.

Following the own goal in the 66th minute, Brouse looked to double the lead less than two minutes later, missing just right of the goal in the 68th minute as the Chants remained on the attack.

Morrow continued to come up big in goal for the Chants, as the sophomore made stops in the net on three consecutive Stetson shot attempts in the 77th, 80th, and 84th minutes to keep the visiting Chants in front at 1-0 with less than six minutes to go in the match.

The Hatters fired off a fury of shots in the closing minute to try to find the equalizer but to no avail, as the Chanticleers held on for the 1-0 road win.

Coastal will open up Sun Belt Conference play at home on Friday, Sept. 16, versus new conference member James Madison. First kick is set for 7 p.m. ET.
