Coastal Carolina Earns 17th Consecutive Win Over Georgia State

Volleyball to travel to App State next weekend

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team swept the Georgia State Panthers 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) for the Chanticleers' 17th consecutive win over the Panthers on Saturday afternoon in Conway, S.C. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 10-5 overall on the year and 2-0 in SBC play, while the Panthers dropped to 4-10 on the season and begin conference action at 0-2.

The Chanticleers' offense attack was led by Paulina Perez Rosas with 13 kills, while Jasmine Rivest and Agata Lesiak finished with 11 and 10 spikes, respectively. Senior setter Brigitta Petrenko totaled 26 assists while adding one kill and four service aces. With the four service aces, Petrenko is now within nine of matching the program record of 181 currently held by Jennifer Hampton (2002-05)

Defensively, the Chants finished with seven blocks, as Christina Nance had four blocks and Lesiak tallied three blocks. Senior defensive specialist Lina Perugini finished with nine digs, while Perez Rosas led the defense with 13 digs.

Coastal rebounded from an early 3-1 deficit to take a 7-5 advantage with a four-point surge highlighted by three-consecutive kills by Perez Rosas. After both teams traded points, the Chants pushed its lead to four at 11-7 with a 3-0 run on three Chanticleer kills.

The Panthers pulled to within two at 15-13 by way of a four-point spurt sparked by back-to-back GSU kills. Coastal Carolina claimed the 25-20 set-one win with not one but two different 3-0 bursts, which included four CCU kills and a Petrenko service ace.

In the second set, Coastal took the early 3-0 lead with a quick pair of kills by Nance. Both squads traded points to give the Chants an 11-7 advantage, just before CCU took a 21-8 lead with a 10-1 surge. The run was sparked by a Panther miscue and capped by super senior Ella Saada's lone service ace. Georgia State cut the Chants' lead to 21-11 with an unanswered three-point run, highlighted by one of the team's eight blocks. Coastal and GSU traded the final seven points with Kendall Harris putting down the final kill for the 25-14 set win for the 2-0 match advantage.

Coastal Carolina opened the third and final set with the early 5-3 lead, highlighted and capped by a pair of Lesiak spikes. After trading points with the Panthers, CCU increased its lead to 10-5 by way of a pair of kills by Rivest, which forced GSU to call its first timeout of the set.

Out of the timeout, Georgia State pulled to within one point at 11-10 with a 5-1 burst aided by three Chanticleer errors. The Panthers and Coastal traded points with GSU taking its first lead of the set at 17-16, only to see Coastal jump back in front at 19-17 with three-straight points on a pair of kills and a Bailee Earnhardt service ace.

After Georgia State battled back to even it up at 19-19, Coastal used a 4-0 run to take the 23-19 advantage highlighted by a pair of Petrenko service aces. After being outscored 4-2 by the Panthers, Coastal held on to claim its second 3-0 sweep in as many days, as Perez Rosas put the finishing touches on the 25-23 set-three win with her 13th kill of the day.

Coastal Carolina will return to the court as the Chanticleers will travel to Boone, N.C., on Thursday, Sept. 29, to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 6 p.m. ET.
