CONWAY, S.C. – In front of a record crowd of 21,165 at Brooks Stadium, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers outdueled the Army West Point Black Knights 38-28 for the program's 150th win on Saturday night in Conway, S.C.
With the win, the Chanticleers start the season at 1-0 for the third consecutive year, while Army fell to 0-1 to start the year.
The Chanticleers outgained the Black Knights 437-344, running 70 offensive plays compared to Army's 47 total plays. Coastal outgained Army on the ground 263-202.
CCU also held a decisive 36:16 to 23:44 edge in time of possession.
Coastal's offensive attack was led by a career night from senior running back
Reese White, who carried the ball 21 times for 133 yards and totaled three touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing. Fellow running back
CJ Beasley also had a career night, as the redshirt sophomore toted the ball 19 times for 91 yards, both career highs.
On top of the running attack, redshirt junior quarterback
Grayson McCall was 12-of-17 for 174 yards and three touchdowns in the air and also added 27 yards and one score on the ground in the win.
Stepping up for the Chants in the passing game were receivers
Tyson Mobley (4 catches, 42 yards),
Sam Pinckney (3 catches, 69 yards, 1 TD), and
Jared Brown (2 catches, 29 yards), all of which saw significant time on offense for the first time as Chants.
Most of Army's yards came from three big plays, as the Black Knights had plays of 73, 70, and 54 yards on the night.
Slotback Tyrell Robinson led Army with nine carries, 135 yards, and a touchdown on the ground, while Jacobi Buchanan and Tyson Riley finished with 32 and 29 yards for the game, respectively, with Buchanan adding a score.
The Black Knights threw for 142 yards in the air, as Cade Ballard came off the bench to go 3-for-5 for 88 yards and a touchdown, and Tyhier Tyler was 1-for-3 for 54 yards a touchdown and an interception.
Defensively, the Chants held Army to just 202 rushing yards, well below their average from last year, and totaled 67 tackles overall, including 5.0 tackles-for-loss.
Leading the way was bandit end
Josaiah Stewart,
Shane Bruce, and
Manny Stokes Jr. with six total tackles apiece, with Stewart adding 1.5 tackles-for-loss and one quarterback hurry.
Fellow Chants
JT Killen,
Adrian Hope, and
Kennedy Roberts all finished with five tackles apiece in the win, while
Tavyn Jackson tallied four stops and recorded his first career interception as a Chant in the second half.
The Black Knight's defense was led by double-digit tackles by Marquel Broughton and Leo Lowin with 12 and 10 stops apiece, respectively.
After both teams opened the game with a punt on their first offensive possession of the 2022 season, Army struck first in a big way midway through the first quarter as Robinson broke loose through the middle of the Coastal Carolina defense for a 70-yard touchdown run to put the Black Knights on top 7-0 with 7:25 to go in the first quarter.
Coastal methodically moved down the field on its ensuing offensive series, as the Chants ate up 6:14 of the clock, driving 85 yards on 12 plays to tie the game up on a six-yard touchdown pass from McCall to White on a fourth-and-1.
On the scoring drive, the Chants converted two fourth-and-1 attempts, both on Army's side of the field, and was highlighted by a 12-year pass from McCall to Brown to cross midfield.
Following a three-and-out by the "Black Swarm" defense, the offense took over again, going to the air once more with an 18-yard pass to Mobley, a 23-yard catch by Pinckney, and a 26-yard touchdown pass and catch from McCall to Pinckney to put the Chants on top 14-7 with 12:21 to go in the second quarter.
The six-play, 65-yard scoring drive took just 2:33 off the game clock and was Pinckney's first career touchdown catch as a Chanticleer after a standout career at Georgia State.
Army went to its bread-and-butter triple-option to knot the score up at 14-14, as the Black Knights used 15 rushing plays to go 75 yards over 9:02 of the game clock, highlighted by a 30-yard scamper from Robinson. Four-straight runs from Buchanan capped the long-scoring drive with a one-yard plunge up the middle with 3:09 to go in the opening half of play.
Neither team would find pay dirt over the remainder of the first half to send the two teams to the locker room tied at 14-14.
The Chants, who won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, opened up the second half with the ball and immediately got on the scoreboard. Led by McCall and White, the home team drove down to the Army 29-yard line before McCall found an open
Tyler Roberts for 14 yards for a first down.
After three consecutive runs took the Chants to the five-yard line, Army was able to force the Chants to settle for a 25-yard field goal from
Kade Hensley, his first career made field goal, to put the Men in Teal back in front at 17-14 with 8:30 to go in the third quarter.
However, just like in the first half, the Black Knights answered with a score of their own, this time going to the air for a 54-yard pass from Tyler to Ay'Jaun Marshall behind the Coastal defense to give the visitors a 21-17 lead with 5:23 left to play in the third frame.
The back-and-forth scoring affair continued, as it was the Chanticleers' turn to find the end zone next on their ensuing possession.
The Chants quickly answered, going 65 yards in just eight plays and 3:56, as McCall once again found an open White, this time in the end zone, for a 14-yard score to give the lead back to the home team at 24-21 with 1:27 to go before the fourth quarter.
The "Black Swarm" defense came up big on Army's next offensive series, as Jackson picked off a Tyler pass along the Coastal Carolina sideline to give the ball back to the offense to start the fourth quarter.
The "Teal Team 6" offense capitalized on the turnover, as the Chants used a mix of pass and rush plays to drive 56 yards on 11 plays and push their lead out to 10 at 31-21 on a two-yard touchdown run by White. White's third touchdown of the game came with 9:51 left to play in the contest.
That was more than enough time for the Black Knights to answer, as the visitors in white and gold again used a big play through the air, as Ballard connected with a wide-open Braheim Murphy for a 73-yard touchdown pass to cut the Coastal lead to three at 31-28 with just under nine minutes to go in the game.
Coastal didn't flinch, as the duo of McCall and
Bryce Carpenter helped lead the offense down the field, picking up five first downs along the way before a McCall five-yard touchdown scamper capped the 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive to push the Chants' lead back to 10 at 38-28 with 5:57 to play.
The defense would seal the win with a three-and-out over Army's next possession, stopping the Black Knights on a fourth-and-9 play to give the ball back to the offense with just over a minute and a half on the game clock.
The Chanticleers (1-0) will return home next week to host Gardner-Webb (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m. ET.
