CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team was edged by conference leader South Alabama 1-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-10-2, 0-6-2 Sun Belt, while South Alabama remains unbeaten and improves to 13-0-3, 6-0-2 Sun Belt.
The Jaguars were first to strike in the 7th minute when Jasmine Green drove down the right sideline and pinged the ball across the six-yard box to the boot of Gracie Wilson. Wilson then laced the ball between the pipes to make the score 1-0.
It was an even contest in the following 30 minutes with neither team taking a single shot.
In the 43rd minute, the Jaguars had a fast break and Monique Gray sprinted down the field. Coastal keeper,
Vivienne Carr charged towards the edge of her box and made a vital save to hold the score at 1-0. Carr was then ruled out of her area and received a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity to put the Chants down to 10 women.
South Alabama's Wilson then stepped up to take the free kick from just outside the area and took aim on goal. Substitute keeper,
Hope Morrow made an excellent diving save to deny the Jaguars of their second goal of the match to keep the score at 1-0.
At the end of the first half, the Jaguars led 5-0 in shots and each team had two corners and five fouls apiece.
In the opening 25 minutes of the second period, the Jaguars took five shots, all of which flew off target and did not threaten the Coastal defense.
The Chants tried to fire things up in the 71st and 78th minutes when
Emily Petring and
Taylor Tolson each took shots, but the South Alabama defense took care of the danger to take the 1-0 victory.
The Chanticleers will be back in action on Oct. 22 to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at 1 p.m. ET.
