Coastal Carolina Falls to Texas State in Season Finale

Stout has tallied 12 triple-doubles on the season

SAN MARCOS, TX – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 29-27) to the Texas State Bobcats in San Marcos, Texas, on Friday evening. With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 19-9 overall and 14-2 in Sun Belt action, while Texas State moves to 19-8 on the season and 12-4 in league play.
 
Coastal's Jasmine Rivest led the offense with a match-high 17 kills, while Jalyn Stout tallied 10 kills and a team-high 23 assists. Cagla Bengi aided the offense with 20 assists as Lauren MaloneValentina Varani, and Agata Lesiak finished with eight, seven, and six kills, respectively.
 
On the defensive side, Varani tallied a match-high eight blocks with Dilara Unal totaling seven blocks in the middle. Sydney Lewis had a team-high 21 digs, while Rivest recorded her 15th double-double with 13 digs and Stout tallied her NCAA-best 12th triple-double with 10 digs.
 
The Bobcats' offense was led by KJ Johnson with 15 kills with Samantha Wunsch (13), Sophie Childs (12), and Bailey Hanner (12) recording double-digit spikes. Ryann Torres finished with a match-high 48 assists.
 
Texas State's defense was led by Hanner, Wunsch, and Jade Defraeye with six, five, and five blocks, respectively. Alyssa Ortega totaled a match-high 23 digs, while Johnson (15), Torres (12), and Maggie Walsh (11) recorded 11 or more digs.
 
The Chanticleers led 10-7 after the first 17 rallies, highlighted by blocks by Unal (two stops), Varani, Stout, and Lesiak. However, the Bobcats answered with an 8-3 run to take a 15-13 advantage only to see Coastal even the score at 15-15 with two quick points that included a service ace by Bailee Earnhardt.
 
Texas State used an 8-2 surge to take a 23-17 lead before the two teams traded the final four points as the Bobcats claimed the first set 25-19 to lead the match 1-0.
 
The two squads traded the first 16 points to remain even at 8-8 to start the second set before the Ladies in Teal used a 3-1 spurt to take a slim 11-9 lead. Texas State opened an 18-13 advantage by way of a 9-2 burst only to see the Chanticleers answer with a 6-2 spurt to trail 20-19, highlighted by four put downs by Rivest. The Bobcats took a 2-0 match lead with a 5-2 run for a 25-21 second set win.
 
The third set began just like the second set as the two teams traded the first 22 points to remain deadlocked at 11-11 only to see CCU take a 14-12 lead with a 3-1 surge. Texas State responded with a 7-2 burst for a 19-16 advantage. Coastal answered with a 6-2 run to lead 22-21.
 
However, the Bobcats and the Chanticleers traded to the next five points to even the score at 24-24 before Coastal Carolina tallied the final two points to win the third set 26-24 and trail in the match 2-1.
 
In the fourth and final set, Texas State opened a 9-5 advantage just to see the Chants' Stout spark a 7-3 surge to trail 12-11. The Bobcats doubled up CCU 4-2 to take a 16-13 lead only to see the Chanticleers rally in front at 18-17 with a 5-1 spurt, highlighted by blocks by Malone and Varani.
 
Texas State moved back to the lead at 22-20 with a 5-2 surge. Coastal answered with a 4-1 burst to lead 25-24, ignited by Varani spike and topped off by a kill by Stout. However, the Bobcats claimed the match 3-1 with a 5-2 run to win the fourth set 29-27.
 
Coastal Carolina will return to action in the Sun Belt Tournament in Foley, Ala., on Nov. 15-19. The Chanticleers will have a two-round bye having won the regular-season title and will be the top seed in the East Division.
