GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball saw their four-game winning streak get snapped as the Chanticleers fell to the UNCG Spartans 65-59 on Wednesday evening in Greensboro, N.C. With the loss, Coastal fall to 4-3 on the year, while UNCG improve to 6-2 overall.
The Chants' offense was led by
Makaila Cange with 17 points, while
Deaja Richardson and
Arin Freeman added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Freeman was the team's leading rebounder as the junior guard grabbed six boards with Cange and
Zaria Hurston grabbed four rebounds each.
The Spartans was led by Jayde Gamble with a game-high 19 points, while Nasia Powell (12) and Ayanna Khalfani (11) totaled double digit points. Khalfani recorded a double-double by grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds with Khalis Cain snagging 11 boards for UNCG.
The first period began with the two teams trading the first 10 points to remain even at 5-5, with Cange scoring all five of the Chanticleer points. The Spartans used an 8-0 run to take a 13-0 advantage just to see Coastal answer with a 7-2 surge to trail 15-12, including layups by the duo of Richardson and
Dalanna Carter.
The second quarter started slow before both teams traded layups to keep the margin at three points at 17-14, UNCG increased its lead to 21-14 just to see
Riley Stack sparked a 6-0 spurt with a jump shot that capped off by a jumper by Hurston as Coastal trailed 20-21 with 2:42 remaining until the halftime intermission. However, the Spartans outscored the Chants 3-2 to close out the first half action with CCU trailing 24-22.
Coastal and UNCG opened the third quarter by trading the first nine points, that included the Chanticleers taking their first lead since the opening period at 28-27 on three points each by Richardson and Hurston. However, the Spartans used an 15-6 burst to lead 42-34 with 10 minutes left to play in regulation.
The final quarter began with both teams finding a way to the free throw line where the Chants cut their deficit to seven points at 43-36. After trading the next five points, Coastal trailed 46-38 before the Spartans increased their lead to 58-43 with a 12-5 run. The Ladies in Teal cut the UNCG lead to 58-53 with a 10-0 burst, highlighted by five straight points by Freeman. Both teams combined for 11 of the final 13 points from the free throw line for the final margin of 65-59.
Coastal Carolina shot 42 percent from the field on 21-of-50 from the field that included 3-of-11 from behind the three-point arch. The Chants lost the rebound battle 39-25 but won the turnover war 17-15 and converted 22 points from the 17 forced turnovers.
The Chanticleers will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the HTC Center by hosting the College of Charleston Cougars in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. The opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
