Rivest Leads Chanticleers to 3-1 Win on Senior Night

Volleyball improved to 13-0 in Sun Belt Conference play

CONWAY, S.C. – Senior Jasmine Rivest led the Coastal Carolina volleyball team to its 13th consecutive victory on Senior Night with a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-11, 27-25) win over the visiting South Alabama Jaguars on Friday evening at the HTC Center. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 18-7 overall and 13-0 in SBC play while the Jags drop to 18-7 on the year and 9-4 in conference action.
 
CCU's Rivest led the offense with a match-high 22 kills while Jalyn Stout added 12 kills. Lauren Malone, Agata Lesiak, and Dilara Unal added 11, seven, and seven kills, respectively. Stout tallied a team-high 26 assists with Cagla Bengi adding 22 assists to spark the offense.
 
Defensively, Unal paced the defense with a team-high three blocks while Malone added two stops each at the net. Libero Sydney Lewis tallied a match-high 22 digs, while Rivest recorded her 13th double-double with 11 digs and Stout tallied her NCAA-best ninth triple-double with 13 digs.
 
South Alabama was led by Hannah Maddux with a team-high 16 kills, while Maddie Soboleski and Abryanna Cannon added nine and eight kills, respectively. Kailey Keeble had a match-high 31 assists. Niki Capizzi led the defense with five blocks while Paige Lynn (13) and Briana Wilson (13) tallied double-digit digs.
 
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina raced to a 6-1 lead after the first seven rallies, highlighted by two kills by Rivest. The Jaguars closed the margin to 10-8 with a 7-4 run just to see the Chanticleers respond with a 4-1 surge that included kills by Rivest and Lesiak.
 
However, South Alabama used a 7-1 burst to take a 15-14 advantage at the media timeout only to see the Chanticleers to take a 19-17 lead with 5-2 spurt sparked by a miscue by USA and capped off by a Lesiak spike. Coastal increased its lead to 22-18 with a 4-2 surge that included an Anna Smith service ace. South Alabama answered with a 7-1 run to win the first set 25-23.
 
The second set saw the two squads trade the first 19 rallies with the Jags holding a 10-9 lead before the Chants pushed in front at 12-10 with a 3-0 spurt, led by kills by Unal and Malone. USA responded with a 5-1 run to take a 15-13 advantage only to see Coastal Carolina even the score at 15-15 with a Rivest kill and a second service ace by Smith.
 
CCU forced South Alabama to call both of its timeouts during a 9-4 run that gave the Chants a 23-19 lead, highlighted by two kills each by Rivest and Stout. However, the Jaguars answered with a second 5-1 burst to even the set at 24-24 just to see the Chanticleers even the match at 1-1 as Rivest spiked the final point in the 26-24 second set win.
 
In the third set, Coastal jumped to a 10-3 lead, sparked by a kill by Rivest and topped off by a spike by Unal. After two quick USA scores, the Ladies in Teal used an 8-2 burst to take an 18-7 advantage. After a break in the action, the two teams traded the next six rallies with the Chanticleers leading 21-10. CCU claimed a 2-1 match lead with a 4-1 run for the 25-11 third set win that included kills by Malone and Rivest.
 
In the fourth and final set, the Jaguars raced to a 10-4 advantage before the Chanticleers started to battle back with a 3-0 spurt, led by a pair of blocks by Unal to cut the deficit to 10-7. South Alabama maintained its three-point advantage at 12-9 as the two teams traded the next four rallies.
 
However, the Jags increased their lead to 15-9 with a 3-0 burst only to see Coastal Carolina answer with a 3-0 surge to trail 15-12 that included a pair of service aces by Bengi. After trading the next six rallies, USA used a 3-1 run to take a 21-16 lead before CCU rallied with a 6-0 spurt to take a slim 22-21 advantage.
 
The Chants fell behind 24-23 as the Jaguars used a 3-1 surge to try and even the match at 2-2 just to see CCU respond with a 4-1 rally sparked by a spike by Stout and topped off by a Unal kill for the 27-25 fourth set win and the 3-1 match victory.
 
Coastal Carolina will meet South Alabama again on Saturday, November 4, at the HTC Center. The opening serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
