CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team opened up its 2023 conference slate with a 5-2 win at home over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Thursday afternoon at the Stevens Tennis Complex in Conway, S.C.
Coastal picked up the doubles point with a pair of wins in doubles play.
The team of
Carlos Berna Ruiz and
Maj Tomac scored a 6-1 win on court No. 1 over Dakotah Bobo and Shamirul Shahril, while CCU's duo of
Ryuya Ata and
Guilherme Toresan followed with a 6-3 win over Saheb Sodhi and Olimjon Nabiev on court No. 3.
The Chants'
Neil O'Connor kicked off singles play with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win over Alexander Gima on court No. 6, while Tomac handed Nabiev a 6-3, 6-2 straight-set defeat on court No. 3 to push the lead to 3-0.
Refusing to quit, USM scored a 7-5, 6-2 win on court No. 4 to put the score at 3-1, only to see CCU's Berna Ruiz pick up the 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win on court No. 1 over Bobo to give the home team the four points needed for the match win.
The two teams split the final two singles bouts, with the Chants' Toresan fighting back from a first-set loss to take the win on court No. 5 in three sets at 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
The Chanticleers (10-5, 1-0 SBC) will remain at home to host Louisiana (7-6) on Saturday, March 18, at noon ET.
